Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant will assist the Head Start Teacher in all aspects of the care and training of children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The Teacher Assistant will focus on the development of the whole child, including partnering with parents. Must have proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing in English; provide a safe environment; and maintain regular attendance. Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for continuing pre-planned classroom activities in the absence of the Teacher, administer instructional activities, and evaluate children as directed by the Teacher. This is a Safety Sensitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise and guide classroom staff and volunteers, manage classroom operations, and provide coaching to Assistants, Aides, and volunteers.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are properly applied and interpreted.
  • Develop and monitor staff training plans, assess training needs, and participate in in-service training.
  • Observe and evaluate classroom effectiveness and staff performance.
  • Participate in curriculum development and regularly meet with teachers regarding lesson plans and classroom management.
  • Implement Head Start curriculum and standards, providing a comprehensive program.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to address children's needs, design meaningful experiences, and maintain professional relationships with families and colleagues.
  • Participate in meetings, case management, and training sessions; consult with service providers regarding child development concerns.
  • Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as scheduled; communicate effectively with parents and encourage family involvement.
  • Use positive guidance methods, avoiding physical punishment or humiliation, and maintain a respectful tone when communicating.
  • Share mealtimes with children, ensuring dietary needs are met and maintaining a child-friendly environment.
  • Maintain a drug-free, respectful, and professional environment; limit cell phone use to emergencies.
  • Support cultural diversity and assist non-English-speaking families.
  • Complete documentation and record-keeping accurately and confidentially.
  • Participate in community recruitment efforts and program activities; maintain good attendance and safety practices.
  • Engage in professional development activities and uphold the philosophies of Head Start and the agency.
  • Perform cleaning duties as needed; other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:

Works under the supervision of the Head Start Teacher; does not supervise others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must enroll in and complete a CDA or an Associate's Degree within 18 months.
  • First Aid and Infant/Toddler CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Clear criminal record check; no disqualifying criminal activity.
  • Understanding of low-income families and parental roles.
  • Health examinations and TB screening documentation.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Must be able to perform various physical activities, operate office equipment, and monitor children’s behavior continuously. Ability to lift 30-40 pounds, work in various environments, and come into contact with childhood illnesses occasionally.
