Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant will assist the Head Start Teacher in caring for and training children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The role emphasizes the development of the whole child, partnering with parents, and maintaining a safe environment. Proficiency in English, regular attendance, and the ability to assume responsibilities in the absence of the Teacher are essential. This is a Safety Sensitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise and guide classroom staff and volunteers, managing classroom operations and providing coaching.
  • Ensure proper application of policies and procedures.
  • Develop and monitor staff training plans and assess training needs.
  • Observe and evaluate classroom effectiveness and staff performance.
  • Participate in curriculum development and meet with teachers regularly.
  • Implement Head Start curriculum and standards.
  • Work collaboratively to meet children’s individual needs and maintain professional relationships with families and staff.
  • Participate in meetings, case management, and training sessions.
  • Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as scheduled.
  • Engage positively with parents and children, fostering family involvement and supporting curriculum activities.
  • Follow positive guidance methods, avoiding physical punishment and humiliation.
  • Maintain appropriate communication tone and conduct during interactions.
  • Share mealtime with children, adhering to dietary and behavioral policies.
  • Uphold a respectful, tolerant environment respecting cultural differences.
  • Complete documentation and maintain confidentiality.
  • Assist with projects and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain good attendance and participate positively in program activities.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts and maintain accurate records.
  • Attend professional development activities and support program philosophies.
  • Perform cleaning duties as needed.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:

The Teacher Assistant works under the supervision of the Head Start Teacher and does not supervise others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Enrolment in and progress toward a CDA or Associate's Degree.
  • First Aid and Infant/Toddler CPR certification within 90 days.
  • Clear criminal background check and absence of disqualifying charges.
  • Understanding of low-income families and parental roles in education.
  • Health examination and TB screening documentation.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform physical activities including lifting, sitting, standing, and moving about the facility. Must communicate effectively and monitor children’s activities continuously. Work environment includes indoor classrooms and occasional contact with childhood illnesses.
