Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant will assist the Head Start Teacher in all aspects of the care and training of children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The Teacher Assistant will focus on the development of the whole child, partnering with parents. Must be proficient in reading, speaking, and writing in English; provide a safe environment; and maintain regular attendance. Responsibilities include assuming classroom activities in the Teacher's absence, administering instructional activities, and evaluating children as directed. This is a Safety Sensitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Supervise and guide classroom staff and volunteers, managing classroom operations and providing coaching.
  2. Ensure proper application of policies and procedures by classroom teachers.
  3. Develop and monitor staff training plans, assessing needs and planning in-service training.
  4. Observe and evaluate classroom effectiveness and staff performance.
  5. Participate in curriculum development and meet regularly with teachers on lesson plans and management.
  6. Implement Head Start curriculum and standards, planning a comprehensive program.
  7. Work collaboratively with staff to address individual children's needs, designing meaningful experiences and maintaining professional relationships.
  8. Participate in meetings, case management, and training sessions; coordinate with service providers regarding child development concerns.
  9. Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as per schedule; foster positive home-classroom connections and family involvement.
  10. Use positive guidance methods; avoid physical punishment or humiliation; communicate appropriately with children and parents.
  11. Share mealtime with children, adhering to dietary and behavioral guidelines; maintain a healthy environment.
  12. Maintain a drug-free, respectful, and professional environment; limit cell phone use to emergencies.
  13. Support cultural tolerance and assist non-English-speaking families.
  14. Complete documentation accurately and timely, maintaining confidentiality.
  15. Assist with projects and perform other duties as assigned; maintain good attendance and professionalism.
  16. Participate in recruitment activities and maintain accurate attendance and program records.
  17. Engage in ongoing professional development and support Head Start philosophies.
  18. Perform cleaning duties as needed; understand that duties may be reassigned as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:

The Teacher Assistant reports to the Head Start Teacher and has no supervisory responsibilities over others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must enroll in and complete a CDA or an Associate's Degree within 18 months, with satisfactory progress.
  • First Aid and Infant/Toddler CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Clear criminal record check; no disqualifying criminal activity.
  • Understanding of low-income families and parental roles in education.
  • Physical health exam and TB screening documentation.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform various physical activities, including lifting up to 40 pounds, moving on uneven surfaces, and spending time on the floor with children. Must operate computers and communicate effectively. Work environment includes classrooms and offices, with contact with childhood diseases.
