GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Substitute Teacher will be responsible for classroom and family educational activities to ensure a quality center-based program for families in the absence of the lead teacher or teacher assistant. Duties vary according to the length of the assignment, and the substitute will serve in classroom sites throughout the Rockingham County service area.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
- Serve as Teacher Assistant in classroom activities.
- Meet the daily needs of all children (e.g., food prep, toileting).
- Maintain a 9:1 child/adult ratio for children 3-5 years old.
- Assist in implementing daily curriculum, including taking anecdotal notes for TSG and Creative Curriculum as needed.
- Follow suggestions and recommendations from managers, leaders, and specialists to establish a quality child/family program.
- Assist in janitorial maintenance of the classroom, building, and playground.
- Attend Head Start parent activities as needed.
- Always know the whereabouts of children in attendance.
- Complete required training hours annually to meet childcare licensing regulations.
- Attain First Aid and CPR certification, and training on blood-borne pathogens as required.
- Comply with Rockingham County Schools Early Learning Head Start policies and procedures.
- Document all contacts with parents.
- Understand the health needs of children (e.g., asthma, allergies, seizures, hearing/vision issues) and make appropriate accommodations.
- Complete daily anecdotal reports on each child.
- Notify the Team Leader when supplies are needed.
- Ensure daily toy sanitation and weekly deep cleaning using approved methods.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Functions
- Assist in serving meals and snacks, including setup and cleanup.
- Prepare cots for afternoon rest.
- Participate in pre-service training and staff meetings as required.
- Perform related work as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood.
- Knowledge of literacy practices in early childhood.
- Ability to relate positively to children, staff, and low-income parents.
- Ability to assume leadership responsibilities.
- Understanding of Head Start standards and philosophies.
- Ability to set and enforce appropriate limits positively.
- Completion of required training on child abuse & neglect laws and indicators.
- Maintain confidentiality of child and family information.
- Ability to work well as part of a team.
- Constructive confrontation skills.
- Knowledge of health and hygiene practices.
- Regular attendance at the work site.
- Ability to lift up to fifty pounds.
Minimum Training And Experience
- North Carolina Early Childhood Credential (NCECC) or completion of EDU-119 course, with ability to apply for NCECC.
- Valid NC Criminal Background Check (CBC) Qualifying Letter.
- Ability to communicate in a second language is preferred.
- Residence in the county of the assigned Head Start center is preferred.
- Working telephone and a valid NC driver’s license with reliable transportation.
- Current physical exam and TB test results within ten days of hire and annually thereafter.
Minimum Qualifications
- Mobility, strength, and dexterity to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to interact at each child's level, including retrieving children who wander or run away.
- Ability to sit on the floor and get up quickly.
- Ability to perform cleaning duties.
- Ability to play and run outside with children.
