Head Start Bus and Classroom Assistant

• Location: As assigned by the director of Transportation and Head Start Coordinator or Grant Manager
• Job Summary: Assists in providing safe transportation and classroom help to students.
• Reports To: Director of Transportation and Head Start Coordinator
• Education, Certification, and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Must be able to communicate effectively and demonstrate success in accomplishing tasks similar to responsibilities.
• Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assist special needs students; manage student behavior; work with groups of students; attend safety meetings; other required skills.
• Essential Job Functions:
  • Assist the bus driver and classroom staff in maintaining appropriate student conduct on the bus and in the classroom.
  • Assist special needs students in getting on and off the bus.
  • Manage student behavior and implement behavioral interventions.
  • Work with groups of students in the classroom to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Attend annual safety meetings and in‑services.
  • Assist children into and out of safety devices.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.
  • Think, concentrate, and interact positively with others.
  • Come to work regularly and promptly.
  • Work under stress and meet all deadlines.
• Other Job Duties: Perform related work as required by the director of Transportation or building principal.
• Physical Demands: Occasional heavy physical effort including lifting and bending. Lifting up to 60 pounds.
• Terms of Employment: Eleven (11) month position; 22.5 hours per week (4.5 hours/day); $19.31 per hour. Employment contingent upon continued grant funding. Grant employees are at‑will employed.
• FLSA Status: Non‑exempt.
• Evaluation: Performance evaluated according to Calvert County Public Schools policy.
• Effective Date: Immediate Vacancy.
