YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South is seeking a Head Start Assistant Teacher at Johnson Early Center in Memphis, TN. This full-time role supports supervision of a group of children in a licensed child development program.

Under the direction of the Center Director, Program Coordinator, and Lead Teacher, you will assist with supervision and implement activities to promote development and safety. Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–6:00 pm with occasional evenings.

Qualifications

• Minimum 18 years of age.
• Enrollment in a program leading to an associate's or bachelor's degree.
• Enrolled in a CDA program to complete within two years of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assist classroom teachers and lead teachers in activities and care.
• Plan and implement age-appropriate classroom activities.
• Maintain rosters and assist with sign-in/sign-out for children.
• Follow daily schedule and ensure smooth operations.
• Complete daily parent reports and use communication tools.
• Maintain stimulating, orderly spaces for children.
• Serve meals and snacks to children.
• Comply with safety standards and incident procedures.
• Communicate with parents about the child’s experience.
• Coordinate with team and uphold YMCA mission and vision.
• Attend staff meetings and participate in events.
• Meet state and local regulatory requirements for licensing.

Overview

YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South ELC – Head Start Assistant Teacher at Johnson Early Center. Location: Memphis, TN.

Summary

Responsible for assisting with supervision of and implementing activities with a group of children in a child development center program.

Purpose of Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the general direction of the Center Director, Program Coordinator, and/or Lead Teacher, the full-time Head Start Assistant Teacher will assist with supervision of and implementing activities with a group of children in a child development center program.

Essential Functions

• Assist classroom teachers and lead teachers in areas including, but not limited to:
• Provide excellent and nurturing care to all children in the classroom.
• Plan and implement age-appropriate classroom activities.
• Maintain accurate rosters of children in care; assist parents with sign-in and sign-out.
• Ensure the daily schedule is followed.
• Complete daily parent reports and utilize communication tools.
• Maintain stimulating and orderly program spaces.
• Serve meals and snacks to children.
• Comply with risk management standards to ensure a safe environment; respond to incidents and follow the YMCA incident management process.
• Communicate with parents about their child’s experience in a positive and timely manner.
• Communicate proactively and upliftingly with the team.
• Assure compliance with state and local regulations.
• Maintain all training and education hours required by the Tennessee Department of Human Services Child Care Licensing.
• Attend and participate in assigned staff meetings and special events.
• Provide a collaborative and cohesive approach to the YMCA’s vision and mission.
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by and agreed to with the supervisor to meet the changing needs of the program and/or branch.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Minimum 18 years of age

Work Schedule

The full-time work schedule for this position is generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 am–6:00 pm; evenings and weekends may be required.
