Job summary

Checkr is hiring a Head of Procurement to lead our procurement team. Reporting to the Controller, this role owns procurement workflows and partners with budget holders to drive negotiation strategy on new spend and contract renewals.

This is a hands-on leadership role: part negotiation, part people management, part cross-functional partnership. The right candidate is comfortable running vendor negotiations personally while coaching a team and providing visibility to the organization.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of procurement, strategic sourcing, or vendor management, including direct people management.
• Proven record of personal contract negotiations across software/SaaS, professional services, facilities, etc.
• Hands-on experience with procure-to-pay or intake/orchestration platforms.
• Strong cross-functional influence skills driving alignment with budget holders and stakeholders.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with evolving processes and tooling.
• Clear, structured communication; translate procurement activity for finance/executive leadership.
• A-player mindset with bias for action and ownership to deliver outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing procurement team with clear priorities and growth plans.
• Build an operating system for procurement (intake SLAs, playbooks, escalation paths) to scale with the company.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to shape negotiation strategy for new spend and renewals.
• Own procurement policy, approval thresholds, and vendor onboarding/due diligence.
• Build SOX controls and audit requirements related to procurement and vendor spend controls.

About The Team/role

Checkr is hiring a Head of Procurement to lead our procurement team. Reporting to the Controller, this role owns our procurement workflows and partners directly with budget holders across the business to drive negotiation strategy on new spend and contract renewals.

This is a hands‑on leadership role: part negotiation, part people management, part cross functional partnership. The right candidate is comfortable running vendor negotiations personally, coaching a team to do the same, while providing visibility to the organization.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and develop a high‑performing procurement team, setting expectations, priorities and growth plans.
• Build the operating system (intake SLAs, negotiation playbooks, escalation paths) that lets the team run efficiently as the company grows.
• Partner with cross functional stakeholders across departments to shape negotiation strategy for new spend and contract renewals.
• Own Checkr's procurement policy, approval thresholds, and vendor onboarding/due diligence process.
• Build the SOX controls and audit requirements related to procurement and vendor spend controls.

What You Bring

• 10+ years of experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or vendor management, including direct people management experience.
• A track record of personally negotiating contracts across a range of spend categories (software/SaaS, professional services, facilities, etc.).
• Hands‑on experience with a procure-to-pay or intake/orchestration platform (Zip or comparable tools).
• Strong cross‑functional influence skills driving alignment with budget holders and stakeholders.
• Comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment with evolving process and tooling.
• Clear, structured communication; able to translate procurement activity into terms finance and executive leadership can act on.
• An A‑player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcome.

We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop ranges for our roles and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. If this role is remote, we have listed the top to the bottom of the possible range, but we will specify the target range for an exact location when you are selected for a recruiting discussion. On‑target Earnings OR Base Salary range (San Francisco, CA)

$190,000—$224,000 USD

On‑target Earnings OR Base Salary range (Denver, CO)

$161,000—$189,000 USD
