Job summary

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine in Spring House, PA, seeks an Associate Director, Expression Sciences to lead high-throughput recombinant protein expression programs across bacterial, insect, and mammalian systems, including membrane proteins.

You will build a collaborative team, drive automation and AI/ML initiatives, manage external partners, and ensure data quality, safety, and regulatory compliance while delivering protein targets for discovery.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, or related field; 10+ years of relevant industry experience (or MS/BS with commensurately greater years).
• Hands-on recombinant protein expression across multiple systems (E. coli, insect, mammalian, cell-free).
• Experience leading HT expression screening campaigns and automation platforms (Tecan, Hamilton).

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and manage scientists in high-throughput expression screening.
• Define and execute HT expression screening platform strategy.
• Design HT screening for challenging soluble and membrane protein targets.
• Drive automation of screening workflows using robotics and ELN systems.
• Partner with discovery teams to translate program needs into screening plans and timelines.
• Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve throughput and success rates.
• Oversee data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results to teams and management.
• Manage vendor and CRO relationships for expression screening activities.
