Are you a visionary engineering leader energized by building from scratch, scaling technology that directly drives business outcomes, and accelerating innovation across the enterprise?

We are seeking a Head of Engineering to launch and lead the Technology Enablement and Acceleration Lab (TEAL) team, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). In this role, you will be instrumental in establishing and leading a dedicated, multi-functional engineering organization focused on tackling the company's most significant challenges through an "innovation factory" model. Must be a US Citizen.

Your mission will be twofold:

  • Developer Enablement Platform : Architect, build, and scale the internal standards, rules, tools, automation, and platforms that supercharge developer productivity, deployment velocity, quality, and security across the enterprise. This includes defining and enforcing architectural governance.

  • Strategic R&D : Rapidly prototype and validate technology initiatives critical to the CIO's office, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture principles and transitioning high-potential projects to delivery teams for broader scaling.

This team exists to maximize the business value of technology across the company empowering product teams to deliver better, faster, and more secure solutions, and directly linking technology investments to bottom-line results

Key Responsibilities

  • Enterprise Architecture Leadership: Define, evangelize, and govern enterprise architecture principles, patterns, standards, and reference architectures. Revamp architectural review processes and ensure compliance across development teams.

  • Strategic Vision & Leadership: Define and champion the technical vision and strategy for the team, aligning with overall business objectives. Identify and prioritize key challenges and opportunities for innovation-driven solutions. Partner closely with CIO leadership, delivery teams, product owners, and security to prioritize initiatives that deliver maximum enterprise value. Build business case frameworks that link engineering KPIs directly to product and financial outcomes.

  • Developer Enablement Platform: Architect and launch the Developer Enablement Platform focused on:

  • Developer experience and productivity

  • Deployment velocity and quality (DORA metrics)

  • Secure CICD pipelines and software supply chain security

  • Vulnerability detection, patching automation, and compliance tooling Drive rapid, enterprise-wide adoption through value-driven metrics and tight feedback loops.

  • Strategic R&D Factory: Rapidly prototype and validate high-priority technology initiatives for the CIO office. Build MVPs, technical proofs-of-concept, and feasibility studies with speed and discipline. Ensure a focus on speed, quality, and impactful outcomes for each initiative. Transition successful innovations to mainstream delivery teams for scaling.

  • Team Building & Leadership: Recruit and lead an elite tiger team of engineers, architects, and DevOps/SRE specialists. Foster a culture of ownership, urgency, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Identify and nurture talent, creating opportunities for growth and development within the team. Create internal career mobility between the team and the broader technology organization.

  • Technical Guidance & Architecture: Provide technical leadership and guidance to the engineering team, ensuring adherence to best practices, architectural standards, and security principles. Participate in architectural design and decision-making for critical initiatives.

  • SRE & DevOps Adoption: Champion and implement SRE principles and DevOps practices to ensure the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of developed solutions. Drive automation and continuous delivery pipelines.

  • Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate with stakeholders across the organization and within EIT, including EIT delivery teams, product owners, the business, and executive leadership. Manage expectations, provide progress updates, and ensure alignment on goals and timelines.

  • Startup Ecosystem Engagement: Maintain awareness of the external startup ecosystem, identifying relevant technologies, trends, and potential partnerships that can inform and accelerate internal innovation efforts.

  • Risk Management & Mitigation: Partnering with IRM’s Information Security team where applicable, identify and proactively mitigate technical risks associated with innovation projects. Ensure appropriate levels of testing, monitoring, and incident response capabilities are in place.

  • Budget & Resource Management: Effectively manage the budget and resources ensuring efficient and impactful utilization.

  • Success Measurement & KPIs: Implement and track KPIs including:

  • Platform product coverage

  • Deployment velocity (features/sprint/month/quarter)

  • Deployment quality (production incident rates)

  • Software supply chain security performance (e.g., near-miss detection rates)

  • Automated vulnerability patching rates

  • Adherence to architectural standards and rules

  • Business outcome impact (revenue growth, operational efficiency, risk reduction) Translate platform adoption into clear, quantifiable business value for product owners.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Technical Mastery: Deep technical expertise across software engineering, cloud-native architectures, DevOps, SRE, and secure CICD practices. Hands-on credibility to lead technical design reviews, architecture sessions, and rapid R&D cycles. Strong proficiency in at least one major cloud platform (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP). Experience with a variety of programming languages and technologies. Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automation frameworks, and infrastructure-as-code. Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools and practices.

  • Business and Strategic Acumen: Proven ability to tie technical platform investments directly to revenue growth, margin improvements, risk mitigation, and operational efficiency. Executive-level communication skills, able to engage senior stakeholders and the board. Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate business objectives into technical strategies. Understanding of business drivers and the ability to align technical solutions with business goals.

  • Innovation and Enablement Leadership: Prior success building internal developer platforms, enablement services, or engineering acceleration programs. Skilled at balancing rapid prototyping with scalable delivery transitions. A strong passion for innovation, experimentation, and the ability to translate ideas into tangible solutions. Experience with rapid prototyping and agile methodologies.

  • Leadership & Talent Development: Proven ability to attract, motivate, and grow top technical talent. Strong mentorship and team development instincts, creating high-performing, empowered teams. Experience managing globally distributed teams is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and resources effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field is required; Master's preferred.

  • 12-15+ years of progressive software engineering experience.

  • 5-7+ years of leadership experience managing engineers and technical leaders.

  • Experience building engineering platforms and/or developer productivity services.

  • Strong cloud expertise (AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Prior startup or innovation leadership experience is strongly preferred.

  • Proven experience in implementing and scaling SRE and DevOps practices within engineering organizations.

  • Experience managing globally distributed teams is a significant plus.
