The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State seeks a Department Head for the Embedded Systems Department (ESD) within MMSO. You will lead strategic direction, technical leadership, and operational oversight, partnering with sponsors and defense contractors to transition embedded capabilities to warfighter platforms.

This role can be filled at various R&D leadership levels; on-site in State College, PA with periodic travel. ARL emphasizes collaboration with government labs and industry.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science required.
• Experience with embedded hardware/software and DoD-related projects preferred.
• Ability to obtain the necessary security clearances.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all aspects of the Embedded Systems Department, providing strategic direction, technical leadership, and operational oversight.
• Support division leadership in developing and maintaining relationships with sponsors to meet funding objectives.
• Build and direct a multidisciplinary team focused on embedded systems architectures and mission-critical control systems.
• Lead research projects from concept to proposal, staffing, budgeting, and delivering results while ensuring high-quality outputs.
• Provide technical oversight of embedded hardware/software development and ensure rigorous deliverables.
