Job summary

Penn State University is seeking a department head for the Embedded Systems Department within ARL's MMSO. The role leads strategic direction, technical leadership, and operational oversight to advance embedded hardware and software solutions for real-time control and data acquisition.

You will build partnerships with sponsors, defense contractors, and government labs to transition cutting-edge embedded capabilities to warfighter platforms, and you will recruit and mentor staff while guiding

Qualifications

• Embedded hardware architectures (microcontrollers, SoCs, FPGAs).
• RTOS and bare-metal programming experience required.
• Hardware-software co-design and integration.
• Edge computing and edge analytics frameworks.
• Data acquisition systems and sensor integration.
• Automated control systems and algorithms.
• Cyber-resilient embedded system design.
• Testing methodologies (HIL, SIL).
• System integration methodologies.
• Experience with DoD embedded systems contexts.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all aspects of the Embedded Systems Department with strategic direction and oversight.
• Foster sponsor relationships to align funding objectives.
• Direct a multidisciplinary team on embedded architectures and edge analytics.
• Oversee research portfolios: develop concepts, proposals, staffing, budgets, results.
• Provide technical oversight of hardware/software delivery and research outputs.
• Transition embedded capabilities to operational platforms for warfighters.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop staff in embedded systems and real-time control.
• Promote innovation, technical excellence, and mission focus.
• Oversee project execution from concept to delivery.
