Head of Design or Staff Design Engineer

ZO COMPUTER COMPANY is seeking a Head of Design or Staff Design Engineer.

THE COMPANY

Our cofounders Rob and Ben met on the early Venmo team and have been friends for 13 years. Rob was the founding engineer both at Fin (a virtual assistant ahead of its time) and Substack. Ben had a long career at Stripe from 2015-2023. Our HQ is in Brooklyn (near SEY Coffee) and we have an office in San Francisco. This role is NYC only, and we work in-person.

THE ROLE

Ben (cofounder): I don't consider myself a designer (or design engineer), but I do consider myself an artist. I make music [0], and find creative fulfillment in building beautiful software. I've been the de facto designer on the team thus far (product & marketing site). I'm open to chatting with folks that sit anywhere on the Design/Design Engineer spectrum, but you must be comfortable working with the medium (code) directly, and have a deep understanding of agents (through active personal use). This is an IC role, and you will be responsible for implementing most of your ideas with steering from engineers.

The ideal design engineer candidate is a seasoned engineer (8+ years), capable of independently implementing their designs while simultaneously upleveling the codebase (with an eye towards helping our team's agents cook). For all candidates, you must be an exceptional communicator across mediums, with writing as the foundation.
