Physical Education Teacher, Grades K-8 and Boys' Basketball Coach

August 2025

University School of Nashville seeks a Boys’ Basketball program director and high school head coach for the 2025-2026 academic year. The goal of the school’s athletics department is to create a positive environment that reflects transformational coaching. The position calls for excellent teamwork with colleagues and incorporates best practices into a growth-oriented teaching style in a K-12 school environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in coaching and teaching basketball at various levels, including a proven track record at high school or college. They should align with the school’s values and mission to foster educational excellence and athletic potential. The basketball program accommodates students of different abilities and experiences, and we seek a program director who can nurture a love of the sport, promote deep competition, and foster an inclusive, supportive, and competitive team environment.

The program director will oversee all program operations, including directing, promoting, and supporting all aspects of the boys’ basketball program. The basketball season for TSSAA occurs in winter, with summer training in June and July. The high school season runs from early November through February or early March, depending on post-season play. Practices are held daily from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Edgehill Campus.

This position may transition into a full-time role if the candidate is interested in the Physical Education Teacher position or other roles listed on our job board. Please apply for both positions. This opportunity allows for integrating athletic coaching with teaching to impact students both on and off the field.

Responsibilities include:

  • Program development and planning
  • Growing and sustaining the basketball program
  • Teaching fundamentals, techniques, strategies, and skills
  • Recruiting coaching staff and managing practice/game protocols
  • Fostering a positive team culture emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect
  • Enforcing safety procedures and protocols
  • Ensuring athlete health and safety
  • Communicating coaching philosophy to players and families
  • Applying developmentally appropriate coaching methods
  • Preparing practice and game plans
  • Promoting sportsmanship and leadership
  • Communicating with players, parents, staff, and administrators
  • Scheduling and coordinating team activities, including travel
  • Motivating athletes and encouraging teamwork
  • Managing gear and uniforms
  • Attending required meetings and complying with policies
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

Experience and Competencies:

  • Playing experience required; college level preferred
  • Proven basketball development experience across grade levels preferred
  • Experience leading high school or college basketball programs
