Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Director assigns, plans, directs, implements and evaluates nursing care for the patients presenting to the Pediatric Office Practice area. Demonstrates leadership that is self-directing, creative and innovative, with an ability to function effectively in stressful situations. Maintains professionalism, is tactful, and relates effectively to and with staff, patients and their parents/guardians of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The Head Nurse is charged with and responsible for:
• Ensures compliance with National Patient Safety Goals: patient identification, communication, medication management, hand hygiene, etc.
• Works collaboratively with Pharmacy and Nursing personnel in adhering to standards applicable to the Vaccine for Children (VFC) Program.
• Assigns staff to and ensures appropriate follow-up with Newborn Screening recalls per DOH guidelines.
• Routinely audits City Immunization Registry (CIR) for patient compliance with current vaccination recommendations and makes referral to provider as needed.
• Routinely conducts risk assessments and implements strategies to reduce adverse events.
• Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed and escalated in a timely manner.
• Works collaboratively with members of the interdisciplinary team in adhering to vision and hearing screening mandates.
• Exhibits a collaborative approach in managing and directing patient flow.
• Routinely conducts and leads interdisciplinary huddles.
• Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record.
• Ensures that staff competencies and mandatory education such as BCLS, NRP, PALS, AIS, etc. are up to date and completed on an annual basis.
• Leads and monitors unit-based performance improvement activities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Assumes an assignment on a short-term basis for the purpose of facilitating patient flow and patient satisfaction.
• Assists nursing personnel in developing clinical and leadership skills through mentorship and or referral to educational training based on identified learning needs.
• Ensures that emergency equipment and supplies are maintained in a state of readiness at all times.
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
• Understands the principles of leadership management with specific skills related to Pediatric Nursing.
• Has knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures relating to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school aged and adolescent population.
• Has knowledge and understanding of medications used in the pediatric population.
• Coordinates and or provides emergency response to codes within and surrounding areas.
• Enhances personal and professional development through attendance to internal and external educational conferences.
• Experienced with electronic medical records, EPIC preferred
• Certified in BLS, NRP and PALS
• Demonstrates a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
• In collaboration with other service HN, provides coverage of MCHS on weekends and holidays.
