Hay Creek Hotels is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Head Maintenance Engineer to join our team of hospitality professionals at The Embers Hotel. In this role, you will oversee the maintenance and operations of our facilities, ensuring that our infrastructure and guest environments meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and quality. You will also hire, develop, and lead a knowledgeable engineering team dedicated to preserving the unique character and functionality of our hotel.
Tucked in the quaint mountain town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, The Embers Hotel offers 36 guest rooms and suites with full service restaurant and al fresco dining patio. Managed by Hay Creek Hotels, this new-build boutique location embodies a fireside retreat with 4 star service in an approachable, natural setting.
Full-time, year-round position with availability to work daytime, evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed. Annual salary $60,000.
Job Summary:
- Manage customer needs by responding promptly to all guest issues, maintain a responsive complaint program and address all work orders in an efficient and effective manner.
- Responsible for the proper operations and upkeep of all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, tile work, laundry, kitchen, refrigeration, lighting systems, and all specialized equipment. Ensure compliance with city, state and /or federal code ordinances and maintain all required permits and licenses for entire facility.
- Cost effective management of equipment purchases or leasing, service contracts, repair and maintenance agreements, out-sourcing local 3rd party tradesmen, management and achievement of budgeted capital and repair and maintenance operating costs.
- Responsible for management of engineering/maintenance staff including; scheduling, employee relations, effective communication venues, coaching, evaluating and reviewing, hiring & training, and leading the team through delegation and accountability.
- Maintain department expenses within budget. Evaluate third party bids, code invoices, manage direct accounts, and ensure monthly checkbook accounting is complete and accurate.
- Develop & maintain preventive maintenance programs for all equipment, guest rooms, restaurant, public areas, parking garage and all other facilities located on property.
- Leadership role in curb appeal, landscaping, and grounds maintenance in all weather conditions.
- Manage the hotel's safety, security and health programs with local fire department, other emergency respondents and vendors to educate staff in areas related to energy conservation, security protection, safety awareness, loss prevention, safety manual, OSHA regulations, Right to Understand Law, safety committee, emergency processes and fire alarm procedures.
- Adheres to all health, sanitation, safety and security laws, policies and procedures in the department/hotel.
- Independently manages maintenance personnel including hiring, training, performance reviews, wage determination, coaching, discipline, termination, and weekly scheduling.
- Responsible for the proper operation and functionality of all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, laundry, kitchen, refrigeration, lighting systems, and all specialized equipment and systems.
- Performs and delegates property and grounds upkeep tasks, including painting, tile work, trim work, detailing, light adjustments, installations, cable/internet assistance, furniture repair, grout work, recycling and waste management, grounds keeping, etc.
- Ensure guestrooms, restaurant, and public areas are maintained to company standard through preventative maintenance program.
- Assume full responsibility for the condition of the property infrastructure and all public areas.
- Chair of Safety Committee.
- Have a thorough understanding of fire alarm procedures, emergency evacuation procedures and all safety related issues. Work with GM and local Fire Department to plan and perform quarterly evacuation drills.
- On call for emergencies 24/7.
- Understand and practice all safety and security procedures, including Emergency Evacuation, Accident Reporting, Right to Know Law, Information Security, Bloodborne Pathogen Procedures, Harassment Policy, and Workplace Violence Policy.

Qualifications:
- 3+ years of hotel engineering/maintenance experience, highly preferred
- Experience with HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, or Construction a plus
- Familiarity with web-based work order systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Strong communication, leadership, and management skills
- Willingness to be on-call 24/7 for emergencies
- Good work habits and attention to detail
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to multitask and stay calm under pressure
- Background and DMV checks may be required
