Job description

The Fairfield Y is looking for a Head Lifeguard to join our team and help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for our community. As a leader in our aquatics department, you will provide supervision for lifeguards, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and support high-quality, member-focused aquatic programs. This role requires strong leadership, a commitment to safety, and a passion for fostering a positive and inclusive experience for all members.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and support a team of lifeguards, ensuring adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  2. Perform all lifeguard duties, including water surveillance, rescues, and first aid as necessary.
  3. Conduct in-service training for staff on CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques.
  4. Assist with scheduling lifeguard shifts and ensuring proper pool coverage.
  5. Monitor pool chemical levels and respond accordingly.
  6. Act as an ambassador for YMCA aquatics programs, engaging with members and promoting a positive environment.
  7. Enforce YMCA policies, including child abuse prevention measures.
  8. Maintain physical presence on the pool deck, remaining alert and ready to respond to emergencies.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Minimum 18 years old with at least two years of lifeguard experience.
  2. Current Lifeguard Certification (YMCA, Red Cross, or equivalent).
  3. CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Oxygen Administration, and First Aid Certifications (must be maintained).
  4. Ability to pass a swimming and physical skills test annually.
  5. Strong communication skills to interact with staff, members, and leadership.
  6. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  7. Physically capable of performing lifeguard duties, including prolonged periods in the water and lifting up to 25 pounds.
