Job summary

Job description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, performs professional duties to ensure effective performance of lifeguard functions. Assists in hiring, training, scheduling, and appraising lifeguards. Ensures that life‑saving certification is current and that all lifeguards are fully competent in performing water rescue procedures. Coordinates in ensuring the safety of patrons in and around the pools, monitoring swimmers, and enforcing all safety rules.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks, and fills in for lifeguards as necessary.
  • Orients new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities; ensures that all lifeguards are current on their training and certifications.
  • Assists with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure adequate coverage of pool areas during operating hours.
  • Ensures that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies.
  • Interfaces with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues.
  • Provides input and feedback while responding to problems.
  • Teaches individual and group swim lessons and other water activities.
  • Works in the capacity of the Pool Manager in his/her absence.
  • Keeps management well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs.
  • Inventories supplies and equipment, recognizes when they need to be ordered, and communicates those needs to the Pool Manager.
  • Reports any unusual activities or unsafe conditions to management.
  • Maintains punctual and regular attendance in accordance with the Attendance Policy.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Supports a single or multiple functions by providing professional services often obtained through education and significant prior work experience.
  • Holds current licenses, certifications, advanced education degrees, and other stipulated technical expertise as required.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge in all aspects of the specialized function and is considered a subject‑matter expert within the peer set.
  • May direct an operation and provide oversight in managing subordinates.
  • Demonstrates emotional intelligence to work effectively in all situations that may occur.
  • Demonstrates precision and accuracy in completing objectives and managing information.
Key Performance Indicators

This position has Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) identified as a measurement of success. KPIs will be shared with all team members who work in this job title and feedback will be provided regarding the successful completion of the KPIs as part of the performance review process.

  • Knowledge of Wellness Center and Tribal rules regarding facility use and operation.

  • Ability to create an environment of teamwork by communicating common goals and showing appreciation for team members’ contributions and on‑going support.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • One (1) year experience as a lifeguard.
  • Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy education and/or work experience.

License/Certifications/Registrations

  • Lifeguard Certification.
  • CPO Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background investigation and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
  • Will require a pre‑employment and random drug screening.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Seeing: Ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye.
  • Walking: Walking throughout the work area on various surfaces.
  • Sitting: Sustained periods of sitting.
  • Standing: Sustained periods of standing.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Talking: Expressing ideas by spoken word accurately.

Working Conditions Required:

  • Ability to work outdoors at high elevations for multiple days.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of twenty pounds.
  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Subject to noise levels and odors.
  • May require working odd and unusual hours.
  • Duties involve walking, standing, crouching, kneeling, and swimming.
