SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HEAD CUSTODIAN I DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to plan, personally perform, and as required, assign and supervise, routine cleaning work in school, office, or recreation buildings, to do related work as required; and performs minor repairs and adjustments of building fixtures and equipment. JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class are distinguished from positions in the lower class of Custodian by assignment of: ( I) Complete responsi bility for the maintenance cleaning and grounds work of an elementary school plant where the incumbent is the only custodial worker and where the incumbent may be expected to exercise routine supervision over a small crew of custodians on a full or part time basis. (2) Supervisory responsibility over a night custodial crew engaged in cleaning and maintenance of a large school plant. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Confers with principal and supervisors regarding care and cleaning programs at the school plant; prepares . work schedules for custodians and see that their work is done in accordance with instructions; conducts frequent inspections of the school plant to insure that standards of safety and cleanliness are met; sees that rooms are set up for special events and needs; reports needed repair work to proper authorities; performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment; operates and checks boilers, lights, and gas heaters as needed; supervises and personally performs the cleaning of walls, furniture, woodwork and other equipment; inspects the work of custodians and assists them in doing their work properly, giving instructions and assists in training inexperienced personnel; requisitions custodial supplies and equipment; takes responsibility for removal of all graffiti from district property; reports sanitary and safety hazards; sweeps walks and driveways, picks up paper and rubbish; supervises and participates in maintenance projects and in the cleaning of the buildings during the summer months; supervises and assists in arrangement of facilities for night meetings, directs visitors and safeguards school property; keeps records and prepares reports; knowledge of all safety equipment and procedures (gas, water, electrical meter, shut¬offs). (WHERE APPLICABLE) - Operates and services swimming pool filters, pumps and chlorinators; tests pool water for P.H. and chlorine contents; keeps water at proper temperature; vacuums pool to remove dirt and foreign objects; cleans pool area. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work; Requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition. and Ability to: Supervise the work of others; Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency; Use basic mechanical tools in performing minor repairs and adjustments; Operates heating and ventilating equipment; Safely use the hand and power tools of gardening and grounds-keeping work; Performs heavy physical labor; Work cooperatively with others. EXPERIENCE: Two years of responsible experience in school custodial work; EDUCATION: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
