Job description

General Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of the building principal and director of facilities and transportation, the custodian's primary responsibility shall be to maintain a safe, clean, and healthy physical environment at the assigned facility by providing custodial, janitorial, and maintenance services so that full educational use of school facilities is available to students, staff, parents, and the school community.

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
2. Two years of experience as a custodian preferred.
3. Ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and department members.
4. Some heavy lifting and physical labor are required. Ability to lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 90 pounds.
5. Ability to understand and follow directions in English.
6. Proper handling of chemical cleaners and supplies following manufacturer's directions.
7. May be required to work during school holidays, weekends, evenings, and overtime during inclement weather as directed.
8. Demonstrates cooperativeness and helpfulness.
9. Any combination of experience and education will be considered.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Maintain the grounds surrounding the school.
• Meet regularly with the head custodian to coordinate janitorial and custodial services needed.
• Follow and implement safe work practices and wear appropriate protective equipment.
• Perform general cleaning and maintenance of the school building including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing according to district criteria.
• Assist with the removal of snow from driveways, parking lots, bus areas, sidewalks, and entrance to the school.
• Maintain a supply of necessary materials and equipment needed to effectively clean the school.
• Maintain the safety and security of the building and grounds, and perform the final security check of the facility at the end of the shift.
• Take responsibility for the general fire safety of the school.
• Sanitize washroom fixtures, including toilets, urinals, washbasins, walls, partitions, and floors according to district criteria.
• Remove refuse from the building and place it in outside refuse containers.
• Move and set up chairs, tables, etc., as required for special school events and daily lunch.
• Interface with all levels of staff within the building, with members of the school community, and others utilizing the school facility.
• Perform other related duties as necessary and assigned by the head custodian, building principal, and director of facilities and transportation.
