Job summary

Southwest ISD is seeking a Head Custodian at Sky Harbour Elementary to monitor and execute cleaning and maintenance routines, ensuring a safe, clean, and efficient school environment.

The role requires 3–5 years custodian experience, ability to operate cleaning equipment, and knowledge of safety procedures. You will supervise custodial staff, manage supplies and schedules, and coordinate basic repairs as needed to keep the campus functional and welcoming.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a cleaning schedule including floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school building and grounds neat and clean including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas.
• Comply with laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
• Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order as needed.
• Maintain preventive maintenance to ensure health and safety of students and staff.
• Regulate HVAC systems to provide appropriate temperatures and economical energy use.
• Make minor building repairs and report major needs to the principal.
• Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by the principal.
• Be responsible for opening and closing the building each school day.

Primary Purpose:

Monitor and follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building and grounds operation.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Must be 18 years of age or older
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and ground maintenance
Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

Experience:

3 - 5 years custodian experience
Working successfully with students, co-workers and community

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Develop and maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas neat and clean.

• Maintain a program of preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
• Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
• Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal.
• Assume responsibility for opening and closing building each school day.
• Establish procedure for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
• Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
• The professionalism to work in a professional manner with co-workers, students and staff.
• Helps in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of custodial staff.
• Monitors the time records of all custodial staff for accuracy.
• Monitor custodial staff to ensure that assigned tasks have been completed.
• Report any concerns regarding custodial staff and custodial needs to principal.
• Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Work outside and inside, exposure to hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, and materials, slippery or uneven walking surfaces and working on ladders; common work area with moderate noise level, ability to work with chemicals, biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases are a possibility

Must have a reliable vehicle, and may be required to work late hours
