Job summary

Camden Rockport School District is seeking a Head Custodian for Camden Rockport Elementary School. The role leads the custodial team, ensures building cleanliness and safety, and supports a 6:00 am–2:30 pm schedule with a 30-minute unpaid break.

The ideal candidate has 3–5+ years of supervisory experience, knowledge of OSHA safety requirements, and strong communication with staff. This full-time position includes health, dental, vision benefits, and paid time off.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5+ years of supervisory or head custodian experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the cleaning and maintenance requirements in the assigned building.
• Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) logs.
• Coordinate custodian schedules to ensure coverage during absences and events.
• Monitor event calendar for timely setup, breakdown, and cleaning of spaces.
• Monitor supply inventory, prepare purchase orders and receive deliveries.
• Maintain building cleanliness at all times.
• Shovel, plow, and sand walkways and parking areas as appropriate.
• Move furniture or equipment as required.
• Make minor building repairs.

About Camden Rockport Elementary School

Camden Rockport Elementary School, nestled in a spacious setting with woods and fields adjacent to the high school, serves approximately 320 students in grades PreK-4 from the towns of Camden and Rockport. CRES is guided by the EL Education Curriculum and Bridges mathematics, and follows the Responsive Classroom philosophy. CRES has a robust system of supports for students, and features the first nature-based public PreK in the state of Maine.

Position Summary

The Head Custodian serves as the building level leader for the custodial team. This position is responsible for ensuring building cleanliness and general safety. The successful candidate will ideally have experience working in a school setting and supervisory experience. This position works 6am - 2:30pm, inclusive of a 30-minute unpaid break.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the cleaning and maintenance requirements in the assigned building
• Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) logs
• Coordinate custodian schedules to ensure adequate coverage during staff absence, weekend needs, and for special events as needed
• Monitor building event calendar to ensure timely setup, breakdown, and cleaning of spaces
• Monitor supply inventory, prepare purchase orders, and receive deliveries
• Maintain building cleanliness at all times
• Shovel, plow, and sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate
• Move furniture or equipment as required
• Make minor building repairs

Qualifications/Skills

• Previous experience in a supervisory capacity
• Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements
• Ability to work cooperatively, respectfully, and in a supportive manner with all co-workers
• Ability to communicate effectively with personnel
• Basic computer skills

Requirements

• Ability to bend, lift objects up to 50lbs, stand and walk for extended periods of time
• 3–5+ years of prior Supervisory or Head Custodian experience strongly desired, or an equivalent combination of trade experience and demonstrated team leadership.
• Background check, including fingerprinting
• Maine Department of Education CHRC Approval

Pay and Benefits

• Pay is $21.77 - $27.22 per hour based on experience, within the parameters of the applicable contract
