Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Head Swim Team Coach provides leadership in preparing, planning, and operating swim team practices at their assigned branch, while coordinating with other branches for competitive meets. The coach promotes and incorporates the YMCA's core values and mission into all aspects of the job and community engagement.
Essential Functions
- Fulfill the Y's mission to promote Christian principles through programs that foster healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
- Build effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; encourage support and involvement; recruit potential volunteers.
- Teach swimmers proper strokes, facilitate progress through swim team groups, and provide corrective feedback to improve techniques.
- Ensure swimmer safety during practices by adhering to safety precautions and regulations.
- Provide leadership and guidance to assistant coaches and volunteers; plan schedules and achievement goals for practices.
- Lead practices with enthusiasm and care.
- Encourage participation among all swimmers.
- Coordinate with other Head Coaches and Aquatics Directors to plan swim meets.
- Communicate program and meet details with parents and participants.
- Organize branch team gatherings, end-of-season celebrations, and other events.
- Maintain records of attendance, registration, achievements, progress, and skill development.
- Represent the YMCA at meets and meetings.
- Recruit, develop, and maintain volunteers and parent committees.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Excellent communication and human relations skills.
- Swim experience required; American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification available post-hire; YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving required after hire.
- Preferred prior coaching experience and familiarity with Team & Meet Manager Software.
Certifications and Requirements:
- CPR and First Aid certifications and safety training within 30 days of hire.
- Y of the USA swim instructor certifications (Principles of Competitive Swimming & Diving) and USA Swimming Instructor Certifications (Coaching 101 & 201) within 30 days of hire (preferred but not mandatory).
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of sport rules and regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate proper swim techniques and strokes.
- Understanding of anatomy, exercise physiology, kinesiology, and child development.
- Commitment to YMCA's mission and values.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Willingness to serve as a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect, following all reporting procedures.
