JOBSUMMARY The Speech and Debate Advisor/Coach develops, supervises, and coordinates a comprehensive high school speech and debate program that promotes student growth in public speaking, critical thinking, argumentation, leadership, communication, citizenship, and academic excellence. The advisor fosters a safe, inclusive, and positive environment while ensuring compliance with district policies, Oregon law and OSAA rules.
ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES Toperformthisjobsuccessfully,anindividualmustbeabletoperformeachessentialdutysatisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
1. Organize and administer all aspects of the school's speech and debate program.
2. Develop and communicate program expectations, goals, schedules, and procedures.
3. Promote student participation and equitable access to the program.
4. Recruit and retain students representing diverse backgrounds and interests.
5. Maintain a program culture emphasizing respect, sportsmanship, academic achievement, and ethical conduct.
6. Coordinate speech and debate events, practices, tournaments, and transportation in collaboration with school administration.
7. Teach and coach students in speech, interpretation, public speaking, debate formats, research skills, argumentation, evidence evaluation, and presentation techniques.
8. Develop practice plans and instructional activities designed to improve student performance and personal growth.
9. Prepare students for local, district, regional, state, and national competitions.
10. Provide constructive feedback and individualized coaching.
11. Encourage leadership, teamwork, self-advocacy, and effective communication skills.
12. Develop lines of communication with students, staff, parents, officials, and booster clubs to promote Speech and Debate.
13. Maintain a record that includes information about equipment, supplies, student eligibility, and emergency medical information.
14. Provide for the safety and security of all students at all times.
15. Comply with all district policies, OSAA rules, league regulations, and competition requirements.
16. Verify student eligibility requirements in coordination with school administration.
17. Submit required rosters, registrations, travel documentation, and competition entries by established deadlines.
18. Maintain accurate records of participation, attendance, results, expenditures, and program activities.
19. Assist in the recruitment and coordination of volunteer judges and tournament personnel when needed.
20. Follow all specified standards, policies, and procedures of the building and Ashland School District.
21. Maintain a positive working relationship with the administration and community that enhances Speech and Debate.
22. Provide proper care, maintenance, and security of facilities, equipment, and supplies from the first day of the season until the cycle of responsibility is completed.
23. Attend work regularly and punctually.
24. Annually pass the District's required online training by the District's assigned due-date.
25. While working collaboratively with others, implement decisions within ASD established policies and procedures.
26. Professionally represent the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
