Job description

Duties: The Head Coach of Strength and Conditioning is responsible for managing, leading and overseeing all aspects related to the operations of the Strength & Conditioning Department within Penn Athletics' Sports Performance Department. The Sports Performance Department, a Center of Excellence is a dynamic, highly interactive and visible component of Penn Athletics. The position requires a high degree of knowledge, experience, passion, energy and enthusiasm to lead a department which develops Penn student-athletes to reach their highest potential mentally and physically, reduce injury, increase consistency and confidence in performance, and contribute to higher winning percentages, Ivy League championships, national contenders and unrivalled student-athlete experiences. The Head of Strength and Conditioning will be responsible for all phases of managing and expanding a staff of full-time, part-time, temporary and intern-level strength & conditioning coaches who develop programming for 33 teams and nearly 1000 Division I athletes. Leadership and management responsibilities include: oversight of assessment and programming as developed by assistant coaches, implementation and management of measures of success as defined by the Strength & Conditioning Department and Sports Performance Department, budget management, hiring and supervising assistant coaches, and interaction with campus and community constituent groups. Additional duties include highly cooperative and collaborative interaction with other Sports Performance team members and sports coaches for an integrated 'team around the team' approach, excellence in customer service when working with sports coaches, teams, and student-athletes, participation in fundraising and revenue generation activities, and planning and scheduling on and off field strength & conditioning sessions. All programming in strength & conditioning should be specific and prepare our student-athletes to meet and exceed the demands of the sport and modified to meet the athlete's position requirements. Additional administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Sports Performance.


Oversees programming that includes Olympic lifts, functional strength and power exercises, flexibility and pliability for body management, balance and coordination, quality of movement and athleticism, and linear and multi-directional speed development exercises to meet the demands of the athlete's position, level, event and sport. Instructs the team, group or individual student-athletes in the safe, correct, optimized and efficient execution of exercises in an effort to obtain the desired results as well as ensure the health, and mental and physical safety of the student-athlete. Instructs student-athletes in safe and effective spotting techniques and procedures in an effort to optimize the effects of the exercise. Instructs student-athletes in body management such as correctives, pre-habilitation, and re-generation exercises to reduce unnecessary injuries, and increase in consistency and confidence in competitive performance. The philosophy of the Penn Sports Performance Department is optimizing strength, not maximizing strength, as we focus on ensuring our athletes are available, well-prepared and ready physically, mentally and emotionally to meet the demands of the sporting environment, can outperform their opponents, perform under pressure when it matters most, and achieve longevity in their athletic and fitness lives after their collegiate athletic experience.

Qualifications: A Master's Degree or more and 5 years to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

At least two years of experience is preferred in progressively responsible positions involving the development and management of sport-specific individual and group strength training programs for men and women. Experience with development and management of strength training programs at the college/university level is preferred. Any experience in management of a health/fitness or weight training facility is preferred. Student-athlete experience, in any sport at the collegiate level, is preferred.
