Job summary

San Domenico School in Marin County, CA is seeking a part-time Mountain Bike Coach for the spring season (December–May). The role entails leading after-school practices twice weekly and Saturday rides, supervising race weekend logistics, and coordinating transportation for the interscholastic team.

You will develop riders' technical skills, promote safe riding, and foster a positive, inclusive team culture aligned with the school's values of study, reflection, community, and service.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• 3+ years coaching youth cycling, ideally at the high school or club level.
• Deep knowledge of NICA/NorCal League rules, trail etiquette, and bicycle mechanics.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate young athletes.
• Ability to work flexible afternoon hours, including weekends for practices and races
• Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the season starts).
• License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License (Class C) with an insurable, clean driving history

Responsibilities

• Lead daily practices focused on endurance, technical skill development, and race strategy for riders of varying ability levels.
• Coach and manage the team during NorCal league races, overseeing pit zone setup, race-day nutrition, and mechanical support.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes by following strict trail safety protocols and maintaining a respectful team culture.
• Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director regarding team progress, league registration, and equipment maintenance.
• Manage team equipment.
• Foster strong relationships with parents through clear and timely communication regarding race schedules, travel logistics, and student progress.
• Coordinate transportation for athletes and equipment to various trailheads and race venues.
• Promote a culture of Panther Pride by encouraging high standards of sportsmanship, environmental stewardship, and academic balance.
• Attend required athletic department meetings and NorCal League coaching summits or professional development sessions.

About the Role

The Mountain Bike Coach at San Domenico School is responsible for fostering a positive, competitive, and inclusive environment for student-athletes. This role emphasizes the development of technical riding skills, trail etiquette, and personal character, ensuring that the mountain bike program reflects the school’s core values of study, reflection, community, and service.

San Domenico fields an interscholastic mountain bike team during the spring season (typically running from December through May), competing in the NorCal Interscholastic Cycling League. The coach leads and supervises all aspects of the season, including training rides and race weekend logistics.

Practices are held after school on weekdays twice a week and on Saturdays, utilizing both our on-site trails and local Marin County trail networks. Races typically occur on weekends at various venues across the region. The coach plans and leads daily rides, provides mechanical support and skills instruction, and supports student-athletes in balancing their athletic goals with their academic responsibilities.

This position plays a vital role within the Athletics Department and reports to the Director of Athletics. The coach works closely with student-athletes, parents, and fellow coaching staff to support a strong team culture, clear communication, and a positive student experience within a school-based athletic program.

• Because driving school passenger vehicles is a core function of this role, candidates must meet strict institutional insurance standards:

Desired Skills:

• NFHS and NICA coaching certification is highly preferred.
• Experience with recruiting processes and preparing athletes for collegiate programs.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between $8,000 and $10,000 per interscholastic season. Placement within the salary range will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidates with fewer years of experience can expect placement toward the lower end of the range.
