Job description

The Head Men’s Golf Coach at Cornerstone carries out their program to accomplish the objectives of the sport within the athletic department, WHAC, and NAIA rules and regulations, and the mission of Cornerstone as an evangelical Christian university. Primary responsibilities include ensuring that each student-athlete is provided with the knowledge and skills for the sport through routine practices, instruction, strength-building and similar activities. The core of Cornerstone University is defined and driven by its Christ-centered mission and Biblical confession.

CLASSIFICATION: Other Part Time (OPT), Exempt. Works about 18 hours/week on average, up to 936 hours/year.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

LOCATION: Grand Rapids, Michigan

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carries out all aspects of the men’s golf program.
  • Models commitment to Christian character and the Community Covenant standards in behavior and interactions with athletes
  • Helps to set up team devotions and Bible Study opportunities.
  • Arranges for participation in community service and supports mission trip opportunities.
  • Supports academic growth and success of student athletes in the program.
  • Prepares and conducts practices, coaching for knowledge and skill-building. Provides special training for individual golf team members as required.
  • Leads, monitors and coordinates training and practice sessions, ensuring that all safety guidelines and standards are maintained.
  • Plans and administers the off-season training program.
  • Recruits and retains highly skilled student-athletes for the team.
    • Scouts high school matches and tournaments
    • Develops recruiting list
    • Corresponds with recruits (e-mail, letters, phone calls, etc…)
    • Hosts and coordinates recruit visits
  • Develops the annual schedule including various tournaments.
  • Develops, monitors and balances the annual budget for the program.
  • Determines fiscal requirements and prepares budgetary recommendations
  • Monitors, verifies and reconciles all expenditures of budgeted funds
  • Orients and enforces student-athletes’ adherence to the policies and regulations of the university and athletic department
  • Selects and supervises assistant coaches and support personnel
  • Coordinates and oversees recruiting efforts of assistant coaches
  • Coordinates and secures all travel arrangements
  • All Cornerstone University employees will regularly interact with students in a variety of projects, activities, and settings. As such all employees are expected to serve as Christian leaders and mentors by effectively living a gospel-centered lifestyle, ministering and discipling through a biblical worldview.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Successful experience in coaching the specific sport
  • Success in a collegiate program as either an assistant or head coach preferred
  • Good organizational, communication and coordination skill essential
  • Ability to work well under deadlines and high pressure situations
  • Ability to recruit student-athletes with potential for academic and athletic success
