Job summary

West Point Public Schools is seeking an Athletics/Activities/Coaching professional to lead junior varsity and assist varsity coaches in a comprehensive athletic program. The role emphasizes participation management, skill development, and promoting sportsmanship in all activities.

The successful candidate will comply with district policies and support the West Point Athletics program while serving as a role model for students and the community.

Qualifications

• Valid teaching certificate or prior coaching experience.
• Strong working knowledge of VHSL rules and regulations.
• NFHS CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Leads JV coaching staff in athlete participation decisions during practices and games.
• Supervises athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to foster skill development, teamwork, discipline, respect, and sportsmanship.
• Adheres to West Point Athletics Handbook and school policies including nondiscrimination, harassment, bullying, and confidentiality.

All coaches are expected to exemplify the mission and vision of West Point Public Schools, and to act as role models and ambassadors for the West Point Athletics Program and West Point Public Schools at all times.

Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and which are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Leads the JV coaching staff in determining athlete participation during practices and games.
• Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
• Read and follow process and procedures outlined in the WPPS Athletic Handbook.
• Assume supervising control over all athletes in JV program.
• Assist varsity head coach for any special needs, i.e., awards night, parent meetings.
• Make suggestions and recommendations that will help the program.
• Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, and encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
• Attend pre-season organizational meetings as assigned by varsity head coach.
• Participate in professional development and become current to new coaching strategies.
• Assist in the organization and execution of home events, including postseason events hosted by West Point Public Schools.
• Be familiar with and adhere to school board policies, particularly those governing student nondiscrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent school board policies.
• Assist in the enforcement of the athletic code of conduct.
• Be prepared and willing to serve as head coach in the absence of the head coach for any reason.
• Positively promotes the athletic program within the school and the community.
• Assists with necessary court set-up/maintenance before, during, and after practices and games.
• Help with the inventory and storage of all equipment during and after the season.
