Qualifications

  • Must have Class B CDL and Bus Driver's Certificate with School Bus & Passenger Endorsement within 3 months.
  • ASE certification preferred; district will pay for training or certification.
  • Reliability, neat appearance, and professional demeanor in interactions with staff, students, and the public.
  • Experience with school buses preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions and determines needed repairs or replacements.
  • Perform diesel/gas engine service, valve train work, water pumps, compressors, turbochargers, seals, and related maintenance.
  • Inspect buses and transportation equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment to keep vehicles available in safe condition.
  • Perform tire work and respond to emergencies to resolve safety concerns.
  • Provide preventative maintenance and assist with route coverage as needed.

Head Bus Mechanic, 261 Day Contract, Benefits, 2026-2027 School Year, Salary based on Negotiated Agreement

Job Goal: The job of Bus Mechanic is for the purpose(s) of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certificates & License Required: Must have Class B CDL, Bus Drivers' Certificate with School Bus & Passenger Endorsement with in first three months of employment, ASE Certified Bus Mechanic preferred, the District will pay for the cost to obtain any training or certification needed.
  • Is present at work everyday, on time, and performs all duties as assigned effectively and efficiently.
  • Is neat and professional in appearance befitting the job they provide the school system.
  • Shall exhibit a professional attitude and demeanor at all times in dealing with the board, school administration, fellow employees, parents, students, and the public.
  • Advanced technical training preferred.
  • Positive recommendation by former employer(s).
  • Ability to work as a part of a team approach.
  • Ability to obtain school bus driver certification and all other requirements.
  • Experience with school buses desired.
  • Job related experience required.
  • Such alternatives to the above as deemed appropriate by the District.

Essential Functions:

  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions (e.g. using computer diagnostic equipment, etc.) for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Do all work on all diesel/gas engines and related parts of valve train adjustments, engine overhauls, installation of water pumps, compressors, turbo chargers, etc., and seal replacements as long as it more cost and time effective to do so in-house.
  • Inspects buses and transportation equipment for the purpose of ensuring it is in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment (e.g. buses, forklifts, trucks, vans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Performs tire work (e.g. changing, balancing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring all buses and equipment are operating on safe tires.
  • Responds to emergency situations (drives wrecker to tow in disabled bus, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Services buses and transportation equipment for the purpose of ensuring it is maintained in a safe operating conditionand scheduled preventative maintenance is performed.
  • Substitutes for bus drivers when needed for the purpose of ensuring a qualified person is able to run the bus on the route.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a clean and well-organized area.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in bus maintenance; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read technical information, composes a variety of documents, and/or facilitates group discussions; and solves practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying mechanical aptitude; meeting deadlines and schedules; and working with detailed information/data. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed under with some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
