Job summary

Detroit Tigers are seeking a Head Athletic Trainer / Physical Therapist to lead the MLB athletic training room, overseeing injury prevention, treatment, and on‑the‑road care for the Major League roster.

The role requires dual credentials, 7+ years in professional sports, valid MI/FL licensure eligibility, and travel with the team while coordinating with physicians, coaches, and performance staff.

Qualifications

• Doctorate (DPT) or Masters in Physical Therapy.
• Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
• Eligible for licensure as athletic trainer and physical therapist in Michigan and Florida prior to Spring Training.
• Current Emergency Cardiac Care / CPR/AED certification.
• Minimum 7 years of experience with leadership in athletic training rooms; baseball or elite sport preferred.
• CSCS or additional clinical specialization a plus.
• Knowledge of baseball-specific injury patterns; throwing athlete emphasis.
• Proficiency with MLB AHMS/EMR systems.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills; ability to communicate clinical uncertainty.
• Willingness to work long hours and travel with the MLB club.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily athletic training room operations for the Major League club, home and on the road.
• Own injury prevention, daily treatment, and acute injury management for the roster.
• Communicate player availability to management, staff, and leadership.
• Travel with the Major League club as the lead of the traveling medical party.
• Apply clinical reasoning for evaluation and return-to-activity progressions.
• Coordinate information flow with coaching, performance staff, and physicians.
• Update staff with changes in player status and rehab progress for informed decisions.
• Document evaluations, treatments, and communications in AHMS per standards.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, and development of staff and interns.
• Stay current with sports medicine literature and incorporate new techniques.
