Job summary

Dignity Health Medical Group in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Head Athletic Trainer to provide expert athletic training services to student‑athletes under the direction of the team physician and in compliance with relevant practice acts.

You will lead a team of athletic trainers, ensure adherence to professional standards and regulatory requirements, and collaborate with partner schools to coordinate coverage for events and comprehensive sports medicine programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in athletic training and one year of experience providing athletic training services.
  • Arizona license as Athletic Trainer (AZ).
  • Athletic Trainer-Board Certified (ATCB).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with head/associate athletic trainers to provide services to partnered schools.
  • Provide coverage for home and away events; travel as needed and assist in scheduling.
  • Develop and coordinate a comprehensive sports medicine program with partners and schools.
  • Serve as liaison between physicians, schools, nurses, administrators, coaches, athletes and families.
  • Assist concussion management procedures and return-to-play protocols with physicians.
  • Provide athletic training services for sanctioned games and communicate with visiting teams.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Head Athletic Trainer, you will provide expert athletic training services to student‑athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician, and in strict accordance with the athletic training practice act. You will also provide crucial assistance to athletic trainers employed by the hospital.

Every day, you will oversee and deliver comprehensive athletic training care, ensuring the health and safety of student‑athletes. You will guide and support your team of athletic trainers, ensuring they adhere to best practices, professional standards, and all regulatory requirements.

To be successful in this role, you will possess exceptional clinical athletic training skills, strong leadership and mentoring abilities, and a deep understanding of athletic training practice acts and protocols. Your capacity to provide high‑quality direct care, effectively supervise and develop staff, and ensure compliance with medical and regulatory directives will be essential in supporting our student‑athletes and professional team.

  • Collaborate with head/associate athletic trainers (if applicable) to provide athletic training services to partnered school districts.
  • Collaborate with head/associate athletic trainers (if applicable) and assist in providing coverage for home athletic events as well as for away events (travel required) and athletic training room hours at partnered schools.
  • Participate and serve as a liaison in the development, coordination, and administration of a comprehensive sports medicine program between our organization, our partners, and partnered schools in which we provide services.
  • Serve as a liaison and coordinator between physicians, the school, school nurse, school counselors, administrators, coaches, athletes, their parents/guardians, and other members of the healthcare team as needed and as pursuant to state and federal laws including FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Administrate and work in coordination with physicians regarding concussion management procedures, including baseline and post‑injury neuropsychological testing for concussion management, monitoring of progressive return to play protocols with concussed athletes, return to play requirements and clearance as directed by physician or by protocol.
  • Provide athletic training services for AIA sanctioned and/or contracted games to visiting athletes and communicate to visiting athletic healthcare team.
Job Requirements

Required

  • Bachelors Other from an accredited athletic training education program (i.e. Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) and one (1) year of experience of providing athletic training services.
  • Athletic Trainer: AZ.
  • Athletic Trainer-Board Certified.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Preferred

  • Masters Other in athletic training from an accredited athletic training education program related field and three (3) years of athletic trainer experience.
