Job description

The Head Athletic Trainer serves sport programs and student-athletes by providing comprehensive health care to include preventive and rehabilitative care of injuries. They serve as a role model in meeting the complementary goals of the Athletic Department.

Education Required

Master’s Degree; NYS licensing requirements must be met and maintained throughout employment; NATABOC certified.

Experience Required

3-years’ experience in athletic training required; collegiate experience strongly preferred.

Special Working Conditions

Regular evening and weekend hours are required.

Skills and Characteristics Required
  • Demonstrated ability to help student-athletes with new/recurring injuries recover physically and emotionally;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work cooperatively with medical staff and students;
  • Ability to clearly, accurately, and fully complete medical forms related to injuries and insurance coverage and to maintain required medical records;
  • Excellent organizational and program design skills;
  • Ability to motivate and lead a staff of athletic trainers;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the stages of student development and the importance of holistic education;
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued learning and professional development;
  • Remain up-to-date with the athletic training profession and related fields;
  • Maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
Primary Duties
  • Provide health care services for intercollegiate student-athletes under the direction of licensed physicians, podiatrists, and/or dentists;
  • Recognize, evaluate, assess and treat athletic injuries/illnesses or refer to medical professionals/services to provide immediate or follow-up care;
  • Lead, motivate and monitor staff. Assign sport oversight to athletic training staff according to interests and strengths. Responsible for year-end staff evaluations;
  • Provide injury/illness prevention and risk management services for student-athletes; Provide treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning programs;
  • Oversee administration of the Athletic Training room. This includes determining and monitoring budget, supplies/equipment inventory, facility maintenance, and medical record keeping;
  • Provide consultation to the student-athlete and coach regarding injury status, clearance, and the ability to participate while maintaining proper confidentiality of the student-athletes’ medical history;
  • Educate student-athletes, coaches and staff on latest medical guidelines, including but not limited to: injury, illness, alcohol, drugs and tobacco;
  • Ensure appropriate coverage for practices and home games; travel with assigned teams, where applicable;
  • Ensure safety, cleanliness, and security of The Hill Center Athletic Training Room;
  • Maintain rehabilitation equipment to include proper code and inspection certificates;
  • Responsible for the proper storage and elimination of medical records;
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and precise injury documentation on student-athletes;
  • Serve as the Athletics and Recreation Department insurance policy liaison to the University’s insurance provider;
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance;
  • Conduct and interpret pre-participation and other relevant screening information received from student-athletes, in accordance with accepted guidelines to minimize risk.
Secondary Duties
  • Assist with oversight of scheduling of on-campus Athletics and Recreation facilities and public spaces within The Hill Center;
  • Serve on appropriate Departmental and campus-wide committees;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Recreation.
