Job summary

A premier communications and power utility contractor is seeking a CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator to operate equipment for installing various cables. The ideal candidate will have HDD experience around utilities, the ability to read prints, and be capable of training team members. Key responsibilities include ensuring proper equipment operations, maintaining safety standards, and assisting with all job aspects. Qualifications

• Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas.
• General knowledge of Utility Construction Procedures, including print reading.
• Demonstrated field experience working with HDD crews, operating rigs and/or locating.

Responsibilities

• Operates Directional Bore equipment for installation of underground cable.
• Ensures proper steering and maintains bore profile plots.
• Reads utility locates and assists with job setup and cleanup.
• Reads locates and coordinates day lighting of facilities.
• Setup and cleanup of work site including traffic control.

Job description

The CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator (HDD) operates equipment necessary to install fiber‑optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three phase power cable and possibly sewer or water facilities safely and efficiently via the HDD trenchless construction method. Must have experience with HDD around utilities in rural and urban areas, experience reading prints and schematics and the ability to train and mentor other team members.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

• Operates Directional Bore equipment for installation of underground cable conduit or utilities.
• Ensures proper steering based on the noted job preparations and projections.
• Operates construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade alignment specifications.
• Maintains bore profile plots and provides customers with directional drilling data.
• Abides by all company and manufacturer safety procedures and industry safety standards, and attends mandatory safety meetings.
• Responsible for the inspection and maintenance of all equipment, including routine maintenance such as greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs as necessary.
• Reads utility locates and coordinates day lighting of these facilities.
• Assists with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities.
• Ensures that setup and cleanup of the work site is completed properly, including traffic and pedestrian control measures.

Education and/or Experience

• Work Experience: Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas. Experience working around or with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment, preferred.
• Industry Knowledge: General knowledge of Utility Construction Procedures, including print reading. Familiarity with procedures and associated tools and equipment necessary to install underground utilities in the most effective, safe, and profitable manner. Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling/boring.

Requirements

• Valid Class A CDL.
• Must be able to pass pre‑employment screenings.
• Demonstrated field experience working with HDD crews – operating rigs and/or locating.
