Responsibilities

  • Operate Directional Bore equipment for installation of underground cables.

Job description

CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator (HDD)

The CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator (HDD) operates equipment necessary to install fiber‑optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three phase power cable and possibly sewer or water facilities safely and efficiently via the HDD trenchless construction method. The operator must have experience with HDD around utilities in rural and urban areas, be able to read prints and schematics, and be able to train and mentor other team members.

  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift as needed.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs to perform skilled movement.
  • Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
  • Operate Directional Bore equipment for installation of underground cable conduit or utilities.
  • Ensure proper steering based on the job preparations and projections.
  • Operate construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade alignment specifications.
  • Maintain bore profile plots and provide the customer with directional drilling data.
  • Abide by all company and manufacturer safety procedures and industry safety standards, in addition to attending mandatory safety meetings.
  • Inspect and maintain all equipment, including routine maintenance by greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs as necessary.
  • Read utility locates and coordinate day‑lighting of these facilities.
  • Assist with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities.
  • Ensure that setup and cleanup of the work site is completed properly, including traffic and pedestrian control measures.
Education and/or Experience
  • Work Experience: Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas. Experience working with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment is preferred.
  • Industry Knowledge: General knowledge of Utility Construction Procedures, including print reading. Familiarity with procedures and tools necessary to install underground utilities effectively, safely, and profitably. Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling/boring.
Requirements
  • Valid Class A CDL.
  • Must be able to pass pre‑employment screenings.
  • Demonstrated field experience working with HDD crews – operating rigs and/or locating.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to maintain equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and carry out instructions.
  • Ability to multi‑task and work in a fast‑paced environment.
