Job summary

Superior Pipeline Services is seeking an experienced Directional Drilling Operator to lead setup, drilling, and conduit installation on outside plant projects. You will work with the Outside Plant Supervisor, Locator, and Laborers to complete tasks from start to finish, including potholing, splicing, and backfilling.

The role requires working with heavy equipment in varying weather, adhering to safety standards, and coordinating with the field team to ensure quality and timely completion.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated safety awareness and adherence to procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a crew.
  • Experience with directional drilling operations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill.
  • Assist potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie-ins.
  • Drive equipment to job site.
  • Confirm bore path with locator/lead.
  • Set up drill equipment, tanks, and grounding.
  • Drill along predetermined path to exit pit.
  • Communicate drill head location via radio.
  • Install pulling gear and connect product; reverse process to install product.
  • Oversee laborers/crew and monitor time usage.
  • Conduct post-job quality checks and required paperwork.
  • Inspect vehicle/equipment and perform routine maintenance including winterizing.

Essential Functions:

The Directional Drilling Operator will be primarily responsible for setup and completion of drilling variable sized underground holes and pulling back required conduit. Drilling Operator will work with the Outside Plant Supervisor, the Locator and the Laborers to complete job requirements from start to finish on outside plant projects including digging boring pit, directional boring, pulling back of conduit, splicing of conduit sections, pulling fiber through conduit, setting hand holes, backfilling and seeding, core drilling and pot holing, building penetrations and close out pictures and redlines.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill
  • Assist in potholing and remediation
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie ins
  • Drive equipment to job site
  • Confirms with locator/lead the bore path to drill
  • Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine
  • Drill out following the predetermined drill path to the exit pit
  • Communicate with the locator/lead via radio to confirm the location of the drill head
  • Assist with the install of proper pulling gear and hook up product
  • Reverse process to install product
  • Oversee laborers and/or crew member’s work and monitor time usage
  • Conduct post-job quality checks
  • Clean, check fluid levels and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required paperwork, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.
  • Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required paperwork (i.e. Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, etc.)
  • Follows specifications for the job and company policies
  • Complies with safety procedures while driving and at job site
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work

Success Factors:

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. multiple times during a work shift
  • Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers
  • Ability to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy
  • English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional skills

Experience and Education:

  • 1+ years of demonstrated Horizontal Directional Drilling experience
  • Strong knowledge of underground utilities
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations (Vehicle and Operator Qualifications)
  • Understanding of client and company work specifications
  • Ability to comply with the “Operator’s Manual” for your equipment
  • Ability to read and comprehend and follow all quality/safety policies and procedures
  • Self-motivated, safety, quality and production minded
  • Ability to work in all types of weather
  • Knowledge of underground pot holing preferred
  • Self-motivated, safety, quality and production minded

Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required within two weeks of employment.
  • Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
