City of Albany, Georgia seeks a skilled operator to lead hydraulic directional drilling and conduit installations, supporting power and telecom networks.

You will supervise drilling operations, coordinate materials, inspect equipment, perform maintenance, and ensure safety on projects for power distribution and fiber optic systems. CDL with endorsements and safety certifications are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; 5+ years of experience operating directional drill heavy equipment.
  • Valid Georgia CDL including appropriate endorsements required.
  • Bucket Truck Rescue Certification, CPR and DOT Flagging training.

Job description

The purpose of this classification is to perform leadership responsibilities associated with operating a Hydraulic Directional Drill, installing electrical conduits; telecommunications duct runs, gas lines, and potable water lines for construction, maintenance and repair of Power Distribution Systems, Fiber Optic Networks, Water and Gas Systems.Performs leadership responsibilities in scheduling Hydraulic Drilling Operations, acquiring the proper material and equipment to complete the project; maintains locate tickets for each project; operates locating equipment to properly identify and protect existing underground electrical utilities.

Installs conduit into existing electrical transformers and switch gear apparatus.

Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include a dump truck, backhoe, trencher, bucket truck, line truck, forklift, boring rig, tension rig, tamp, tractor, chipper, stump grinder, phasing stick, voltage ohmmeter, breakers, regulators, hydraulic tools, jackhammer, air compressor, pipe horn, post hole digger, shovel, axe, saw, chain saw, mechanic tools, cable/chain/nylon-belt hoists and other related equipment).

Performs routine general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop and work areas, etc.); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Performs manual work functions associated with power distribution maintenance as well as construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems (which may include assisting with laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.).

Performs leadership and training associated with the operating of a directional drill to install conduit/cable to support electrical and telecommunications networks; may install potable water lines and high/low pressure gas lines.

Instructs locator in navigating the boring drill head.

Assists in installing, maintaining and repairing underground and overhead structures including high mast lighting and street light systems, poles, cables, and related equipment to carry power transmission/distribution lines used to conduct electrical energy between generating stations, substations, and consumers.

May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays in the event of a natural disaster, power outages, down power lines, trees, etc. or any disruption of service to WG&L customers; during periods of severe weather, required to notify immediate supervisor for any instructions.

Assists in installing transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, wire conductors and auxiliary equipment to poles.

Operates a two-way radio in the performance of duties.

Assists in opening switches or clamping grounding device to energized equipment to de-energize lines or accessories.

Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.

Maintains adequate supply of equipment, tools, supplies and materials on trucks for use at work sites.

Utilizes precautionary work methods and safety equipment to ensure crew and public safety.

Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.

Installs, maintains, and removes decorations and lights during holiday seasons.

May assist with manual tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of the Fiber Optic telecommunications system.

Attends classes/workshops to obtain knowledge of safe work practices associated with energized electrical lines and high/low pressure gas lines.

May flag traffic.

Performs other related duties as required.

High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by at least 5 years of previous experience and/or training operating directional drill heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Will be required to pass written and hands-on tests. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). Requires Bucket Truck Rescue Certification, CPR and D.O.T. Flagging training.Data Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of obtaining information or clarifying details. Performs such within well established policies, procedures and standards.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
