Job summary

Job description

This position is responsible for the operation of motorized equipment in support of the installation, maintenance, and repair of the storm water system.

  • Drives and operates an Eductor Truck to vacuum debris from ditches, inlets, and pipes and to excavate dirt from around underground cables, pipes, gas lines, telephone lines, water lines, and power cables; operates an Eductor Truck to unstop drains and cut roots from pipes.
  • Trains, supervises, and monitors the work of assigned personnel, including inmate laborers.
  • Performs daily maintenance and safety inspection of assigned equipment.
  • Assists crews with identifying cave-in ownership; assists other departments with vacuum and high pressure water services.
  • Enforces work site safety regulations.
  • Maintains inventory of all supplies and equipment.
  • Operates a backhoe, tillers, dump truck, and chain saw.
  • Supervises and participates in repair and maintenance activities; repairs cave-ins on storm sewer boxes; repairs cave-ins on storm sewer pipes; replaces pipe joints; operates a back-hoe as needed; replaces broken grates and inlets; removes trees from waterways.
  • Maintains required records.
  • May perform the work of Storm Water Crew Leader in his or her absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department which is normally six months but may be altered.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5 - close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
