Job summary

Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland seeks a Physician Assistant I (PA-1) to serve as operative first assistant across multiple service lines including DaVinci robotics, general, orthopedic, gynecologic, vascular and urology. You will perform preop/postop assessments, develop treatment plans with physician oversight, and collaborate across departments to optimize patient care.

The role is part-time with rotating shifts.

Qualifications

• ARC-PA certified PA program is required.
• PANCE completion is required.
• Maryland PA license is required.
• Prescriptive authority (CDS/DEA) required.
• BLS Certification required.

Responsibilities

• Assists operative first assistant in OR per delegation and supervision.
• Develops laparoscopic and DaVinci robotic first‑assist skills.
• Performs daily post‑operative rounds and coordinates care with supervising physician.
• Manages admission H&P, daily progress notes, orders, discharge and transfer summaries.
• Evaluates patients in the ED and on the surgical floor per attending surgeon.
• Assists bedside procedures (central venous catheter, tube thoracostomy, arterial catheter, PICC).
• Supports quality initiatives and compliant professional billing.

Description

The Physician Assistant I (PA-1) functions as an operative first assistant for multiple service lines including but not limited to Davinci robotics, general surgery, orthopedic, gynecological, vascular and urology and completes post-operative assessments and management of post operative surgical patients. The PA-1 makes an assessment based on history and physical, orders ancillary tests and treatment modalities as deemed appropriate, and integrates all data in determining a diagnosis and initiating a treatment plan, with approval of the supervising physician and attending physician. The PA-I works in a team structure and communicates with all hospital departments pertinent patient findings to facilitate a collaborative management of patient care.

Essential Functions

• Provides Surgical assistance in the operating room upon request to any surgeon with a delegation agreement and as assigned by the Clinical coordinator of APPs/designee.
• Develops laparoscopic and DaVinci robotic first assist skills.
• Performs daily post-operative rounding and facilitate/coordinate care of the patient as requested by the supervising physician.
• Responsible for admission History and Physical examinations, daily progress notes, daily orders, discharge, transfer and death summaries, discharge/transfer orders and prescriptions for all patients admitted to them by the attending surgeon.
• Conducts evaluations of patients in the Emergency Department and on the surgical floor at the request of the attending surgeon.
• Assists credentialed practitioners of bedside procedures including central venous catheter placement, tube thoracostomy, arterial catheter placement and peripherally inserted central catheters.
• Supports Quality initiatives of Holy Cross Hospital including medication reconciliation, universal time out procedures, SCIP, VTE prevention, and electronic documentation.
• Supports timely, accurate and compliant professional billing.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate from a PA program that is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA).
• Passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).
• Must maintain current licensing as Physician Assistant in the State of Maryland.
• Must qualify for prescriptive authority (Controlled Drug Substance [CDS] and Drug Enforcement Agency [DEA]).
• Must have the ability to work in both the operating room and inpatient units
• Must maintain BLS Certification.
• Must possess excellent communication skills.
• Must function well in a team environment.
