Job summary

The University of Minnesota's Laboratory for Udder Health (LUH) is seeking a detail-oriented laboratory assistant to support diagnostic and production activities. Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological testing per established protocols.
  • Prepare samples for diagnostic testing, interpret results, and document in LIMS.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments for reliable performance.
  • Respond to Oceasoft alerts, investigate issues, and ensure timely resolution.
  • Provide responsive client service via calls and emails.
  • Assist with inventory management and routine lab supplies.
  • Follow lab safety, biosafety, and regulatory SOPs.
  • Conduct daily QC on prepared media and record-keeping.
  • Assist with drafting/revising SOPs and implement new diagnostic tests.
  • Identify improvements and troubleshoot procedures as needed.

About the Job

This position supports the diagnostic and production activities ofthe Laboratory for Udder Health (LUH) within the VeterinaryDiagnostic Laboratory by performing microbiological testing,culture media preparation, and quality assurance processes. Therole contributes to accurate, timely diagnostic results andhigh-quality product delivery that support animal health and clientneeds. Success in this position requires strong attention todetail, technical proficiency in laboratory practices, effectivecommunication, and the ability to work both independently andcollaboratively in a fast-paced environment. A commitment toquality, safety, and continuous improvement is essential.

Job Duties
45% Testing/General Laboratory Responsibilities
  • Perform microbiological testing and related procedures inaccordance with established protocols.
  • Set up and prepare samples for diagnostic testing, accuratelyinterpret results, and ensure proper documentation in LIMS.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments to ensurereliable and consistent performance.
  • Respond to Oceasoft alerts, investigate issues, and ensure timelyresolution.
  • Provide responsive customer service by addressing phone calls,emails, and client inquiries.
  • Assist with inventory management, including preparation andrestocking of laboratory supplies.
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures, biosafety guidelines, andregulatory protocols at all times.
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance such as supply stocking,transporting biohazardous waste to the autoclave room, andmaintaining cleanliness.
  • Conduct daily quality control on prepared media, includingcontamination checks, growth pattern assessment, andrecord-keeping.
  • Review relevant literature to remain current on diagnostictesting as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
25% Media Laboratory Responsibilities
  • Perform quality control and maintenance of culture media inaccordance with protocols.
  • Stamp and process media, prepare plate orders, and packageshipments for clients.
  • Create and affix shipping labels, transport packages todesignated docks, and record charges in the shipping system.
  • Provide backup support for media laboratory and studentresponsibilities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
15% Expanded Laboratory Duties-LUH
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on email and clientcommunication: MNEasyOrder@umn.edu
  • Assist with drafting, revising, and editing SOPs, forms, andrelated documentation.
  • Assist with the implementation of new diagnostic tests to expandcapabilities.
  • Identify areas for improvement and recommend efficiencyenhancements to supervisor.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, procedures, and diagnostic processes asneeded.
  • Receive supplies, verify against orders, record in the chemicallog as appropriate, and label chemicals according to SOPs.
  • Support research initiatives and participate in specialprojects.
  • Maintain and document assigned equipment in Q-Pulse.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
10% Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QAQC)
  • Participate in quality assurance activities in accordance withthe VDL Quality Manual (SYS.QM.001) and System Policies(SYS.POLICY.001).
  • Perform all procedures according to VDL SOPs.
  • Assist in the detection and review of nonconforming work,determination of corrective/preventive actions, and contribute tocontinuous improvement initiatives.
  • Review and update CV or resume annually, providing a copy tosupervisor as needed.
5% Safety
  • Employee is trained to follow the lab safety plan created by theVeterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, or an equivalent schedule asarranged with the supervisor. The employee is required to workselect University of Minnesota holidays. Overtime may be requiredbased on operational needs. Occasional weekend or othernon-standard hours may be required as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualification: BA/BS degree or a combination ofrelated education and work experience to equal at least fouryears.

About the Department

The University of MinnesotaVeterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is a national leader inproviding rapid diagnosis of animal diseases, identifying emergingdiseases, developing new diagnostic methods, and trainingdiagnosticians and veterinarians. The VDL serves the interests ofthe livestock and poultry industry, animal research scientists andeducators, and companion animal owners. We provide strong supportto the state as the official laboratory of the Minnesota Board ofAnimal Health as well as supporting the national animal and humanhealth system. The laboratory is a part of the University ofMinnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and serves as Minnesota’sonly full-service laboratory for animal health diagnosis.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $31.93-$23.01 per hour, depending oneducation/qualifications/experience
