Job summary

A leading higher education institution is seeking a Hazardous Materials Manager to oversee the management of hazardous waste and materials recycling. The ideal candidate will have a degree in a relevant science, extensive experience in hazardous materials management, and be responsible for regulatory compliance and safety training. This is a full-time position located in Chapel Hill, NC, with an emphasis on maintaining a safe environment across campus.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in hazardous materials management or a Master's degree in a related field.
  • Hazardous waste operations training including annual refreshers.
  • Experience at a major research institution is preferred.
  • 40 Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher.
  • RCRA hazardous waste training certification and annual refresher.

Responsibilities

  • Manage hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and materials recycling for the University.
  • Oversee regulatory obligations and compliance.
  • Ensure safe environment through training and consultation.
  • Ensure regulatory permits (RCRA Part B, NRC, NPDES) are maintained and followed.

Skills

Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The role of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department is primarily environment, health and safety functions at the University. In support of the University’s core mission, EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Hazardous Materials Manager is to manage the hazardous waste, radioactive waste, mixed waste, TSCA waste, medical waste, universal waste, and materials recycling for the University. This position manages the University Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) facility and regulatory obligations including RCRA Part B Permit, NPDES Stormwater Permit, NRC radioactive waste general permit, and corresponding regulatory liaison with federal, state and local agencies.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

4 year degree plus 2 years or Master’s degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
  • NC Class C or higher valid Commercial Driver’s License with a hazardous materials endorsement.
  • This position is Emergency Duty, Adverse Weather Essential and Communicable Disease Mandatory On-site Primary.
  • Hazardous waste operations training: 40 Hour HAZWOPER and annual refresher; RCRA Part B Permit training per 40 CFR 270.14(b)(12) and 40 CFR 264.16 (initial and annual).
  • 40 Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher.
  • RCRA hazardous waste training certification and annual refresher.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
  • B.S. in Environmental Science or Engineering or closely related field; minimum of ten (10) years of progressive hazardous waste and hazardous materials management experience.
  • At least 5+ years environmental regulatory compliance experience in interpretation, application and management of compliance obligations for hazardous waste and hazardous materials at a major research institution.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Preferred candidate will hold Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • The position requires the ability to wear/use a respirator.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push, pull for extended periods.
  • NC Class C or higher valid Commercial Driver’s License with a hazardous materials endorsement.
  • Emergency Duty & Adverse Weather position.
  • Communicable Disease Mandatory position.
