About the Transportation Department:
The Transportation Department’s mission is to facilitate safe and secure commercial transportation on public highways, railroads, and transportation facilities. It also promotes quality and equitable service for the public and commercial carriers in industries such as household goods, buses, and ferry boats. This is achieved through reducing and preventing crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, hazardous materials incidents, developing consumer protection regulations, and resolving consumer and carrier complaints.

What You'll Do:

This position as a Civil Forfeiture Compliance Officer in the Compliance Division has two primary duties:

  1. Assess civil forfeiture actions against roadside inspections (hazmat and non-hazmat) using existing software
  2. Conduct compliance reviews and prepare Reports of Violation (ROV)
  3. Hold telephone conferences with Respondents to seek removal of violations or reduction of civil forfeiture assessments
  4. Interact with carriers and shippers to ensure compliance with applicable laws and rules
  5. Communicate hazardous material safety requirements to drivers, shippers, and carriers of hazardous materials
  6. Obtain and maintain certifications required for roadside inspections and attend in-service/update training as needed

Report to location: 180 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215

The employee's home must be within 40 miles of the report location. This position offers a remote-hybrid schedule, allowing remote work on designated days, subject to change with limited notice. A teleworking agreement must be approved by management.

PUCO core hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with start/end times varying based on operational needs.

Salary Information: Starting salary is set at the lowest range, with potential increases after six months and annually thereafter. The State of Ohio also offers cost of living adjustments, longevity supplements after five years, and wellness incentives.

Qualifications include 48 months of training or experience in commercial transportation safety practices and procedures, 12 months in hazardous materials regulation compliance/enforcement, and a valid driver’s license. Alternatively, 24 months as Hazardous Materials Investigation Specialist 1 or equivalent qualifications are acceptable.
