JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objective

Haven Charter is the first Career and Technical Education SUNY Authorized high school in NYC with a focus in the Health Sciences sector. Opening in the South Bronx July 2025 with a 9th grade inaugural class of 120 students and offering pathways to both college and career. We are currently looking for our founding teaching team, which will play a critical role in realizing the mission, values and youth centered vision for our school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Reporting to the Principal, teachers at Haven Charter High School (HCHS) are responsible for teaching students by planning, developing, organizing, and implementing an appropriate and specialized instructional program to meet the unique needs of all students in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Connect with adolescents and cultivate caring relationships;
  • Effectively balance classroom management and instruction to meet the needs of all students;
  • Plan and implement instructional activities that address each student's strengths and needs, while fostering active learning;
  • Strategically integrate technology in the classroom, utilizing different types all units and lessons to help engage students, encourage collaboration, and improve learning outcomes;
  • Create a well-organized classroom that fosters effective learning and a welcoming, culturally inclusive environment;
  • Provide diverse learning materials and guide students in using educational resources effectively;
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, provide constructive timely feedback, and monitor their individual progress;
  • Utilize assessment data to identify learning needs, differentiate instruction, and track student progress;
  • Maintain and update accurate, complete student records and reports in compliance with laws, district policies, and school regulations;
  • Facilitating student behavior by implementing restorative practices, maintaining discipline in alignment with school policies, and applying appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary;
  • Actively engage in ongoing self-reflection of practices, beliefs, and values;
  • Collaborate with colleagues within and across content areas to develop project and unit plans which facilitate the student learning process;
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay updated on current teaching practices, curriculum changes, and to align with school priorities;
  • Engage in department, school, and parent meetings while demonstrating openness to continuous learning and professional growth;
  • Routinely engage and collaborate with students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs;
  • Contribute to the wider school community through participation in schoolwide initiatives and extracurricular activities such as team building, student skill labs, sporting activities, clubs, student organizations and/or other projects as needed;
  • Engage actively in departmental and school-wide diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism learning opportunities

Required Clearances

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on HCHS needs.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with adolescents in grades 9-12, with two years of teaching experience preferred;
  • Bachelor’s degree with teaching experience; Master’s degree preferred;
  • NYS 7-12 certified or in process preferred;
