Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago seeks a Federal Work Study – TRIO SSS Peer Mentor at Harold Washington Campus to support TRIO SSS students. You will advise and guide participants, explain college resources, and coordinate programs and orientations.

The role requires enrollment in CCC, 6+ credit hours, and maintaining a 2.0 GPA with FERPA-compliant handling of confidential information. Flexible hours Mon-Wed 9am-5pm, some evenings and Saturdays.

Qualifications

• Applicants must be actively attending one City Colleges of Chicago college.
• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours (pre-credit or credit).
• Must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students).
• Must be in good standing with no academic restrictions.

Responsibilities

• Advise, guide, and serve as a role model for TRIO SSS students.
• Explain CCC resources and refer students to appropriate services.
• Assist with coordinating programming, workshops, and orientation.
• Participate in recruitment activities and classroom visits.
• Handle confidential student information per FERPA guidelines.
• Attend mentor training sessions and submit required reports.

FEDERAL WORK STUDY – TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PEER MENTOR

HAROLD WASHINGTON CAMPUS – TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES DEPARTMENT

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) is a federally-funded financial aid program that provides subsidized part-time employment for eligible students in order to assist them with postsecondary financial needs. City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) complies with the Department of Education’s regulations regarding the FWS program and allows students to benefit from this opportunity.

Primary Objective

The FWS program encourages students to gain experience in their prospective fields by placing them in areas and departments aligned with their area of study whenever possible. Students are able to use their wages towards educational and living expenses.

FWS jobs are available in areas such as academic departments, laboratories, libraries, administrative offices, student centers and several off-campus locations.

Essential Duties

• Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the TRIO SSS Peer Mentor advises, guides, and serves as a role model for other TRIO SSS Students.
• Explains CCC system to project participants; helps students become aware of College resources; advises and refers students to appropriate college resources.
• Assist with coordination of programming including academic workshops and TRIO SSS Student orientation.
• Participate in program recruitment activities such as, informational sessions and classroom visits.
• Provides information on study techniques, organizational skills and learning aides to support the student’s academic pursuits.
• Meets with assigned mentee(s) to advise twice a month.
• Assists with setting goals and works toward accomplishing each.
• Advocates for mentee as necessary.
• Attends mentor training sessions as required.
• Records observations and submits reports to assigned supervisor as required.
• Answer inquires via email, phone, and Zoom.
• Creates student files and assists with documentation of services.
• Handles confidential student information in adherence with FERPA guidelines.
• Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Service Excellence Standards.
• Flexible Hours within Monday-Wednesday 9am-5pm, Thursday 9am-6pm, Friday 9am-4pm availability. Some evening and Saturday available but not required.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements:

• Applicants must be 16years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States
• Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago
• Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes
• Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate
• Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)
• Applicants must be in “good standing” – no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
• Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
• All positions are “employment at-will”

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago.
• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hour pre-credit of credit classes.
• Must be a part of the Students Financial Aid Program and approved for Federal Work Study.
• Must successfully pass CCC hiring process (Including criminal background check & drug screening if “sensitive’ responsibilities are in the job description)
• Promotes a positive role model and favorable public image as City Colleges of Chicago representative.
• Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Services Excellence Standards.

Salary Range:

$17.05 per hour

Offered rate will be determined based on whether assigned location is on campus or off campus.
