Job summary

MatX is seeking a Hardware Systems Engineer in Mountain View to own the design, verification and validation of AI compute boards and trays for its rack-scale data centre platform.

You will work across control, data, and management planes, improving power efficiency, scalability and reliability while coordinating with thermal, mechanical, ASIC and software teams. This role blends design work with lab bring-up in a hands-on environment.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years in system-level development within server/computer/network industries.
• Experience with high-power AI server design is desirable.
• Hands-on lab bring-up and design validation experience.

Responsibilities

• Own board design, schematics, verification and reliability test plans for AI compute boards.
• Design and capture schematics and release Gerber files with layout teams.
• Collaborate with thermal, mechanical, ASIC, software and manufacturing teams.
• Bring up boards and debug hardware issues in the lab.
• Support platform and manufacturing tests.
• Collaborate with JDM on the broader platform.

What MatX Is Building

MatX is on a mission to be the compute platform for AGI. We are developing vertically integrated full-stack solutions from silicon to systems including hardware and software to train and run the largest ML workloads for AGI.

About The Role

We are looking for a Hardware Systems Engineer to join our Hardware Systems team. In this role, you will take full ownership of defining, designing, and validating compute trays, boards, and interconnects for our rack-scale AI data centre platform. You will work across control plane, data plane, and management plane functionality, playing a pivotal role in driving power efficiency, scalability, reliability, and system performance at scale.

What You’ll Do Here

• Full ownership of board design, specifications, schematic design, verification and reliability test plan for our AI compute boards


• Design and capture schematic and work with layout engineers to release Gerber files


• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as thermal, mechanical, SIPI, ASIC, platform software and manufacturing diagnostic software teams.


• Bring up boards and debug hardware issues in the lab


• Support platform and manufacturing tests


• Collaborate with JDM

Who You Are

• At least 10 years of experience in system-level development, preferably within the server, computer, or network industries.


• Proficient in DC/DC PoL and multi-phase VRM designs and verifications with 48V and 12V bus. Experience with high-power AI server design is desirable.


• Experience with BMC and DC-SCM designs


• Experience with 100G+ Ethernet and high-speed SerDes interfaces, PCIe Gen5/6, as well as SPI, I2C, UART, USB


• Familiar with criteria of critical components selection


• Hands‑on experience with board design using schematic capture tools and Allegro


• Hands on experience on lab equipment such as real time scope, logic analyzer, PCIe exerciser and analyzer.


• Demonstrated ability in lab bring‑up and design validation


• Proven track record of delivering shipped products


• Excellent verbal and written communication skills


• Excellent team player


• Familiarity with OCP ORV3 HPR, VHDC, and IEC standards is a plus


• This position requires both design work and lab work

Compensation

The US base salary for this full-time position is determined based on a variety of factors including role, experience, location, job-related skills, and relevant education and training. Career length is only a guideline for compensation.

• Early Career - $160,000 - $275,000 + equity


• Mid Career - $175,000 - $400,000 + equity


• Senior Career - $250,000 - $600,000 + equity
