Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Security Engineer for its First-Party Hardware team to own the end-to-end security foundation for AI hardware systems, spanning hardware security, embedded security, and system security at data-center scale.

You will partner with silicon, hardware, firmware, and operations teams to define and deliver device trust, provisioning, attestation, and lifecycle security across production deployments. Location: San Francisco, CA, Hybrid: 3 days onsite.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of hands-on security in hardware, embedded, firmware, or low-level systems.
• Experience shipping or securing real hardware platforms and firmware update systems.
• Knowledge of secure boot, TPMs, roots of trust, device attestation, and lifecycle design.
• Ability to translate risk into technical requirements, validation plans, and evidence.

Responsibilities

• Own security requirements, threat models, validation strategy, and launch-readiness evidence from design through production.
• Design and review secure boot, measured boot, roots of trust, platform firmware resilience, and firmware signing.
• Own device identity, provisioning, enrollment, attestation, certificate lifecycle, and key-management requirements.
• Harden management interfaces and operations paths across BMCs, hosts, accelerators, and service tooling.
• Drive security requirements for manufacturing, supply chain, firmware signing, storage encryption, and decommissioning.
• Build and drive validation for security-critical hardware and firmware behavior, including lifecycle transitions and recovery flows.
• Partner with vendors and contract manufacturers to turn security requirements into deliverables and evidence.
• Drive end-to-end closure across design, manufacturing, deployment, fleet operations, and incident response.
• Investigate hardware and firmware security issues and drive durable fixes with engineering owners.
