Job summary

South Dakota Department of Transportation in Sioux Falls offers three Intern - Transportation/Construction Engineering positions for the Summer session (May - August). Interns will gain hands-on experience on heavy highway projects under the guidance of project engineers and field staff.

Duties include sampling/testing construction materials, inspections for specification compliance, survey layout assistance, and exposure to project documentation and recordkeeping.

Qualifications

• Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply.
• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

Responsibilities

• Interns will gain hands-on experience on heavy highway construction projects including grading, concrete paving, asphalt surfacing, and bridge construction under guidance of the Project Engineer and field staff.
• Assist with sampling and testing construction materials, perform inspections to ensure work meets specifications, and support survey crews with field measurements and layout.
• Learn construction administration processes, including documentation and project recordkeeping; duties are outdoors and may be physically demanding.
