Ann Arbor YMCA is seeking a Gymnastic Instructor for part-time evening and Saturday classes in Ann Arbor. You will teach selected gymnastics classes with safety and youth development in mind, under the supervision of the Sports and Recreation Director.

The role emphasizes leadership, organization, and strong communication to create meaningful experiences for children and families, while upholding YMCA values and participating in ongoing trainings.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1 year training in gymnastics.
  • Experience planning and instructing gymnastics classes to groups of 6-10 children.
  • Instructors are expected to have an in-depth knowledge of safety factors and current teaching practices.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare lessons and teach classes as directed by the Sports and Recreation Director.
  • Supervise groups of 6-10 children and ensure a safe gymnastics environment.
  • Maintain records such as attendance and progress reports; inform Program Coordinator of registration issues.
  • Build relationships with students and parents; encourage involvement and identify volunteers.
  • Uphold YMCA core values and participate in staff trainings and meetings.
  • Follow all YMCA policies and safety procedures and report incidents as needed.
  • Organize and store class equipment; report maintenance needs and damaged equipment.
  • Arrange substitutes and inform the Gymnastics Program Coordinator of any absences.
  • Inform students and parents about gymnastics programs and schedules and refer to other programs.

Position Summary

Gymnastic Instructors are responsible for the teaching of specified classes in compliance with the standards, policies and procedures of the Ann Arbor YMCA. It is expected that instructors will possess leadership, organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to develop and implement effective lesson plans.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare lessons and teach classes as directed by the Sports and Recreation Director.
  • Supervise groups of 6-10 children and ensure teaching practices facilitate a safe gymnastics environment.
  • Maintain records as required e.g. attendance, progress reports; inform the Program Coordinator of any student whose registration in class is not verified on the class registration list.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Uphold and exemplify YMCA Core Values.
  • Attend staff meetings and program in-service trainings as required.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary. In emergencies, contact the Program Coordinator or membership desk immediately.
  • Organize and put away class equipment. Report promptly to Program Coordinator any conditions requiring the attention of cleaning or maintenance staff as well as any damaged equipment.
  • Obtain a YMCA-approved substitute instructor for any class in which an unavoidable absence prevents teaching commitments from being met. Inform the Gymnastics Program Coordinator of any anticipated absence and the name of the substitute instructor.
  • Convey information on gymnastics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.

Requirements
  • A minimum of 1 year training in gymnastics is required.
  • Experience planning and instructing gymnastics classes to groups of 6-10 children is preferred.
  • Instructors are expected to have an in-depth knowledge of safety factors and current teaching practices and techniques, successful teaching experience, and on-going personal initiatives to continue and improve professional growth and technical skill in one’s area of expertise.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Must demonstrate core competencies in the areas of Mission Advancement, Collaboration, Operational Effectiveness and Personal Growth.
  • A patient, high-energy, and a goal-oriented attitude is essential. Experience working with participants form a diverse range of backgrounds is preferred.
  • Must be certified in concussion prevention, recognition and response within 60 days of employment.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified within 60 days of employment.
  • Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) while maintaining alertness for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 80 pounds in weight.
  • Position requires medium physical effort to be able to move and set up heavy equipment with the support of other staff.
  • Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
Position Facts

Weekday evenings and Saturdays. Two shifts per week is strongly preferred.

$14-$15 depending on experience
