Contract: 194 Days per Year

Reports To: Building Principal and/or Superintendent

Position Summary

The School Counselor supports the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and college and career development of students. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to address student needs and promote a positive, supportive, and successful school environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides individual and small-group counseling to students based on identified needs.
  • Provides information, guidance, and available resources to students and families who may need financial or community assistance.
  • Meets regularly with appropriate grade-level teams to discuss student needs, concerns, interventions, and progress.
  • Assists in coordinating Section 504 Plans and Educational Plans (EPs), working collaboratively with teachers, parents/guardians, administrators, and other appropriate staff. Serves as a case manager when assigned.
  • Registers students who are new to the school and assists with orientation to school procedures, expectations, resources, and available learning opportunities.
  • Plans and coordinates age-appropriate college and career readiness activities, career days, and student orientation programs.
  • Provides classroom guidance lessons and supports school-wide initiatives related to student well-being, positive decision-making, and social-emotional development.
  • Assists with anti-bullying initiatives, crisis intervention, student referrals, and other student support services as appropriate.
  • Utilizes positive, proactive, and student-centered strategies to improve student behavior, engagement, and motivation.
  • Meets with students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) as needed to provide counseling and behavioral support.
  • Supports Step 3 of student behavior plans, including the use and monitoring of the Choices Behavior Sheet.
  • Serves as a collegial leader and positive role model by supporting activities that strengthen the school counseling program.
  • Advocates for the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral success of all students.
  • Maintains professional and ethical standards when working with students, families, school personnel, and community agencies.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and professional standards.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in School Counseling required.
  • Valid school counselor license/certification as required by the State of Indiana.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, staff, administrators, and community agencies.
  • Knowledge of student academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and college and career development.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound professional judgment.
Contract
