Job summary

GSMR in Bryson City, North Carolina seeks an Onboard Entertainer/Musician to travel between cars, delivering musical entertainment and passenger service during rail excursions. You will engage guests with curated selections and Appalachian-inspired tunes while maintaining a friendly, professional presence.

This seasonal, non-exempt position pays $14-$17 per hour, plus tips, and offers instrument maintenance reimbursement.

Qualifications

  • Ability to play an acoustic instrument (fiddle, guitar or banjo).
  • Ability and willingness to sing and play without amplification.
  • Two years of entertainment experience preferred.
  • Familiar with Appalachia history and music.

Responsibilities

  • Entertain passengers on board general excursions, specialty trains, and on-ground events when requested.
  • Time management to ensure equal interaction and music for all guests.
  • Curate songs for celebrations such as birthdays, honeymoons and anniversaries.
  • Know songs representing GSMR and its region; be prepared for regular requests.
  • Maintain a professional GSMR-approved appearance.
  • Board and de-board train cars at assigned stations.
  • Follow Safety Rules and participate in daily safety training.
  • Complete required paperwork and records promptly.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Job Summary:

The Musician/Onboard Entertainer travels from car to car providing musical entertainment and customer service for the passengers during the rail excursion as well as on properties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for entertaining passengers on board general excursions, specialty trains, and off-board (on grounds) when requested.
  • Time management is necessary onboard the train to ensure that all guests have an equal amount of interaction and music.
  • Entertain guests by curating songs based on specialty celebrations, ie. Birthdays, Honeymoon, Anniversary, etc.
  • Have broad knowledge of songs that best represent GSMR and its surrounding region, in addition to being prepared for songs requested on a regular basis. Example: “Wagon Wheel”
  • Always maintain a professional appearance in GSMR-approved attire.
  • Boarding and de-boarding train cars at an assigned boarding station.
  • Comply with GSMR policy, procedures, and safety program, including Safety Rules, Operating Rules, and participation in ongoing safety training/regular daily safety meetings with onboard staff.
  • Complete required paperwork and recordkeeping in a timely manner when requested.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as requested.
Work Environment:
  • Work on and off the train in varied terrain in all weather during both daylight and dark hours.
  • Must be able to work on a moving train and the grounds.
  • Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 0-100 degrees.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Enclosed and Open-Air Moving Train Cars.
  • Works directly with the public.
QualificationsEducation, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:
  • Ability to play an acoustic instrument, preferably a fiddle, guitar, or banjo.
  • Ability and willingness to sing and play instrument in front on an audience in a non-concert setting without amplification.
  • Two years of entertainment experience, preferred.
  • Must be familiar with Appalachia history, and music of the Appalachia/Bluegrass etc.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with coworkers and customers.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule with morning, night, weekend and holiday hours.
