Job description

The Business Development Manager (BDM) in our small business will have a diverse and hands‑on role, handling a wide range of tasks including sales, marketing, strategic planning, and customer relationship management. The BDM will wear multiple hats to drive growth and ensure the business runs smoothly. Due to the dynamic nature of our business, the BDM must be highly adaptable and ready to pivot strategies quickly, working closely with other team members and departments to respond to changing market conditions and business needs.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, or a related field.
  • An MBA or other relevant advanced degree can be advantageous but is not always required.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of experience in business development, sales, or a similar role within the government contracting sector.
  • Experience in managing and developing proposals for government contracts, including familiarity with Requests for Proposals (RFP), Request for Quotations (RFQ), and other solicitation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct market research and analysis to identify business opportunities and inform strategies.
Essential Duties:

The BDM responsibilities include the following:

Identifying Opportunities:
  • Identify, pursue, and secure government contracts.
  • Expand the company's presence in the government and commercial sectors by fostering relationships with customers and prime contractors.
  • Actively monitor government procurement opportunities, including requests for proposals (RFPs), requests for quotes (RFQs), and other solicitations.
  • Analyze market trends, agency priorities, and procurement forecasts to identify potential business opportunities.
Relationship Building:
  • Build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including government and commercial buyers, prime contractors, and industry partners.
  • Establish rapport to position the company favorably for contract awards.
Proposal Development Support:
  • Collaborate closely with the leadership team to manage proposal teams and develop winning proposals.
  • Provide strategic input, assist in solution development, and ensure proposals align with client requirements and agency objectives.
Market Research and Analysis:
  • Conduct thorough market research and analysis.
  • Gather intelligence on competitors, industry trends, and emerging technologies to inform business strategies and identify areas for growth.
Strategic Planning:
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing business development strategies aligned with the company's goals and objectives.
  • Work with the leadership team to create comprehensive plans to penetrate new markets, expand service offerings, and achieve revenue targets.
Contract Negotiation and Management:
  • Negotiate contract terms and conditions.
  • Work closely with the leadership team to ensure favorable contract terms while mitigating risks for the company.
Compliance and Ethics:
  • Adhere to strict compliance and ethical standards in all business development activities.
  • Ensure that proposals and contract negotiations comply with regulatory requirements and company policies.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Track and analyze business development metrics, such as win rates, pipeline growth, and revenue forecasts.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management to assess business performance and make informed decisions.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with clients, partners, and team members.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with government and commercial clients, prime contractors, and industry partners.
  • Ability to develop and implement business development strategies aligned with company goals.
