Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Group Teacher in New York, NY to supervise children and implement developmentally appropriate programs. You will plan activities that support education, health, and social development, and keep accurate records for DOE/DOH compliance.

You will work under the Educational Director, contribute to staff training, recruit enrollment when needed, and engage with families to share progress and assemble conferences. Strong computer and DOE platform skills are required.

Qualifications

  • Must meet NYS DOH, DOE and Salvation Army requirements for the center.
  • Group Teacher must have NYS Early Childhood Certification Birth-2 or be on a study plan towards certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children at all times according to DOH and DOE regulations.
  • Plan and execute a classroom program meeting educational, social, development and health needs.
  • Develop educational goals appropriate to each child's age and development.
  • Maintain classroom furniture, equipment and materials in good condition.
  • Promote professional growth of classroom associates with the Educational Director.
  • Keep written progress records according to DOE, DOH and Salvation Army policy.
  • Communicate child progress to parents and center staff.
  • Build good relationships with parents, caregivers, and Salvation Army colleagues.
  • Conduct parent conferences and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assist in recruitment activities to increase enrollment in centers.
  • Fulfill administrative functions in absence of Educational Director.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, NYC DOE online platforms, and Teaching Strategies.

Overview

Under the supervision of the Educational Director, the group teacher shall be responsible for working within the framework of The Salvation Army and carrying out its functions, policies and procedures, observing the schedules in the center and adhering to its established personnel policies and practices.

Responsibilities
  • Appropriately supervise children at all times according to DOH and DOE regulations to facilitate safety and optimal program functioning.
  • Plan and execute a program within the classroom that meets the educational, social, developmental and health needs of the group and the individual child.
  • Develop educational goals appropriate to the age and developmental level of each child.
  • Take responsibility for keeping classroom furniture, equipment and materials accessible and in good condition.
  • Assist the Educational Director in promoting the professional growth and development of classroom associates.
  • Keep accurate and up to date written records on children’s progress according to DOE, DOH and Salvation Army policy.
  • Regularly communicate child’s progress to parents, caregivers and relevant center staff.
  • Maintain good working relationships with parents/caregivers and Salvation Army colleagues.
  • Conduct parent conferences.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in recruitment activities to increase enrollment in the centers.
  • If necessary and appropriate, fulfill administrative functions in the absence of the Educational Director.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), NYC Department of Education online platforms, and Teaching Strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned, consistent with the above and according to programmatic need.
Qualifications
  • The group teacher shall meet the requirements set by the NYS DOH, DOE and The Salvation Army for the day care center in which he/she will be employed.
  • A Group Teacher must have a NYS Early Childhood Certification Birth-2 or be on a study plan towards certification.
